Add 80 US gallons of hot water in reserve without replacing your water heater

Sometimes an electric water heater works very well but no longer keeps up at peak times. A business has added a washing station, a duplex has been converted into a single-family home with two more bathrooms, a daycare fills several sinks at once at lunchtime. The Bradford White M3ST80R5 hot water storage tank answers that need: it keeps 80 US gallons (67 imperial gallons, or 303 L) of already heated water in reserve, ready to be used along with the water from the heater. AirGreen installs it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.

The role of a hot water storage tank

A storage tank does not heat water by itself. It has no element and no coil: it is an insulated tank that holds the water produced by another unit, such as an electric water heater or an electric boiler. Its benefit is simple. The water heater works continuously at its own pace and fills the reserve; when demand jumps suddenly, the stored water adds to the heater’s water and the temperature at the tap holds longer.

This approach often avoids replacing a unit still in good condition with a larger model. It also splits the hot water volume between two tanks, which makes it easier to get through a narrow staircase or into a small mechanical room.

Where the M3ST80R5 fits

With its 80 US gallon volume, this tank suits small buildings and neighbourhood businesses rather than large buildings. A few typical examples: a hair salon rinsing hair all day long, a daycare, a small restaurant or café whose dishwasher and sinks run together, a plex whose hot water is produced by a single unit, or a large home heated by an electric boiler whose hot water production lacks reserve.

In each case, we start from the real demand: number of fixtures, appliances running at the same time and length of the peaks. The tank is only recommended if it truly solves the situation; sometimes a better-sized water heater remains the best solution.

How it fits into an existing electric installation

The tank is connected to the water heater or electric boiler by a piping loop. A small circulating pump, controlled by a thermostat, moves water between the heating unit and the reserve to keep it at the right temperature. Cold water enters the system, passes through the water heater, then goes to the tank and to the taps depending on the layout chosen.

Because stored water can be kept hotter than the water delivered to the taps, we add a thermostatic mixing valve at the outlet when needed to limit the risk of scalding. The exact layout depends on your current unit; it is explained in the quote, along with the choice of pump and controls.

A tank protected by two anodes

The inside of the M3ST80R5 is lined with Vitraglas with Microban, Bradford White’s lining for its steel tanks. The manufacturer adds two anode rods. An anode wears away on purpose in place of the steel: with two rods, protection is better spread over the height of the tank. In a tank where the water is renewed every day, this detail weighs heavily on service life, especially when the water is hard or treated by a softener.

Insulation and drain valve

2 in of CFC-free foam covers the sides and top of the tank, and Bradford White states that its storage tanks meet or exceed the ASHRAE 90.1b standard. For a tank that holds hot water at all times, good insulation is part of the basic equipment.

The brass drain valve is low-restriction: yearly draining removes sediment better than with a small plastic valve. Its vandal-resistant design is appreciated in businesses and common areas where several people have access to the mechanical room.

Working pressure and safety

The working pressure is 150 psi (1,034 kPa). Like any hot water tank, the M3ST80R5 must be protected by a suitable relief valve, with a discharge pipe directed to a drain. If the building’s water entrance has a check valve, we also plan a thermal expansion tank. For buildings where ASME construction is required, Bradford White offers it as an option in this series; we check this requirement with you before ordering.

Manufacturer’s warranty

Bradford White provides a 5-year limited tank warranty and a 1-year limited parts warranty.

Dimensions and choice of location

At 58 3/4 in high and 24 in in diameter, the M3ST80R5 fits beside the existing water heater in most mechanical rooms. It weighs 192 lb empty, but much more once filled: it must sit on a concrete floor or a solid, level base, ideally near a floor drain. The shorter the distance to the water heater, the simpler the circulation loop and the less heat it loses.

Installation of the Bradford White M3ST80R5 tank by AirGreen

AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal and active in heating, ventilation and air conditioning for more than fifteen years. Our RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 covers ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. For adding a storage tank, our work includes:

  • assessment of the hot water demand and of the existing heating unit;
  • choice of location, check of the floor and access to the drain;
  • if needed, removal of an old tank that is out of service;
  • 2 in water connections, the circulation loop and isolation valves;
  • installation of the relief valve, the discharge pipe and, if required, the expansion tank and mixing valve;
  • the electrical connection of the circulating pump and its control;
  • commissioning, temperature settings and maintenance advice, including yearly draining and anode inspection.

We serve businesses and homes in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, Brossard, Saint-Hubert, Boucherville, Blainville, Repentigny and the entire South Shore and North Shore. Free on-site estimate, written quote and financing available.
