Quick facts
The A.C.R. copper tee has three female ends of the same diameter (C × C × C). It is used to create a branch on a refrigerant line: splitting a line in two, or adding a tap for an accessory. Each tube slides into one end, then all three joints are brazed.
Branch, split, tap
In commercial refrigeration, the tee feeds, for example, two evaporators from the same line or forms a header in a mechanical room. It is also used to install an accessory on the line, such as a gauge or a pressure switch, and to replace an existing tee during a repair.
What about multi-zone heat pumps?
A multi-zone heat pump is not branched with an ordinary tee. Depending on the unit, each indoor head connects to its own port on the outdoor unit, or goes through the branch fittings specified by the manufacturer. Those fittings ensure the refrigerant is distributed properly; a tee does not.
Thirteen diameters, from 3/16 in to 2-5/8 in
The tee is available for tubes of 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, 1-1/8, 1-3/8, 1-5/8, 2-1/8 and 2-5/8 in outside diameter. It is an equal tee: all three ends take a tube of the same diameter.
Good practices
Cut each tube square, deburr and clean, then braze all three joints under a light flow of dry nitrogen. Designing a multi-branch circuit and working on refrigerant are reserved for a qualified refrigeration technician.

A branch on the line
The tee splits a line in two or adds a tap, with three ends of the same size.
- Feeding two evaporators on one commercial refrigeration circuit
- A tap for a line accessory, such as a gauge or a pressure switch
- Headers and branches in a mechanical room
- Replacing an existing tee on a line

What to know before installing
- All three ends take a tube of the same outside diameter.
- On a multi-zone heat pump, branches are made with the parts specified by the equipment maker, not with a plain tee.
- Braze all three joints with a light flow of dry nitrogen.
- Designing a multi-branch circuit is a job for a qualified refrigeration technician.

Frequently asked questions
Can a tee connect two heads of a multi-zone heat pump?
No. Multi-zone systems use the outdoor unit’s ports or the branch parts specified by the equipment maker. A plain tee does not split the refrigerant properly.
Are all three outlets the same size?
Yes, it is an equal tee: a 5/8 in tee takes three tubes with a 5/8 in outside diameter.
What does C × C × C mean?
All three ends are female: each one takes a tube, fitted then brazed.
Can you install it?
Yes. Our technicians design and install refrigerant piping, residential to commercial, in Greater Montréal.
