A large room with a cold floor, warmed from below

Some rooms stay cold at floor level even when the thermostat shows the right temperature: a garage converted into a family room, a four-season sunroom, a basement on a slab, an addition built over a crawl space. A wall unit mostly heats the upper part of such a room. The Floor Console Heat Pump ARCOAIRE D5FSFA | 16,000 BTU - R454B approaches it the other way around and sends warm air out at floor level. The D5FSFAH16XAK console is paired with the D5CSHAH18AAK outdoor unit, with a variable-speed compressor and R-454B refrigerant.

Its certified ratings are 20.2 SEER2, 12.5 EER2 and 10.3 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation under ENERGY STAR ID 3556060, its certificate still lists heating capacity at -30 °C, and it qualifies for a $1,704 LogisVert grant.

The large rooms this size targets

The 16,000 BTU size is meant for rooms larger than average, often converted after the fact: the garage turned into a playroom or office, the enclosed sunroom you want to use in winter, the full basement transformed into a family room, the large living room with an entire wall of glass. These are spaces where people spend time, seated or on the floor, and where a cold floor is noticed right away.

They are also spaces where insulation varies enormously. A slab insulated underneath, a converted garage with rebuilt walls and the garage door replaced by an insulated wall, a sunroom with high-performance glazing: all of this changes the load. Conversely, a single-glazed sunroom may need more than one unit, or remain a three-season room. The load calculation done during the visit says so clearly, before any quote.

Why a console rather than a wall unit

In a large room, warm air blown from the top of a wall tends to stay high. You end up with a warm head and cold feet, especially above a slab or a crawl space. The console starts at the floor: warm air spreads along the floor, warms the surface you walk on and then rises gently through the room.

Large glass surfaces also produce a cold draft that slides down the glass and across the floor. A console placed under the main window counters it directly, as baseboards and radiators used to do. Finally, in a sunroom that is almost entirely glass, there is often simply no wall for a wall unit.

A certified pairing, not an assortment

The 16,000 BTU console works here with the D5CSHAH18AAK outdoor unit. Certificate AHRI 215324120, published by NEEP, covers this specific pairing: the ratings and capacities on this page apply to this combination and not to another. It is also this pairing that appears on the LogisVert list. We therefore install exactly the two certified model numbers, and we list them on the detailed invoice.

Winter, according to the certificate

The certificate publishes three heating points, measured separately; we report each one as published.

  • 14,200 BTU/h at -8 °C (17 °F), with a COP of 2.60, or 89 % of the nominal capacity.
  • 17,500 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), with a COP of 1.95, or 109 % of the nominal capacity.
  • 7,600 BTU/h at -30 °C, with a COP of 1.21.

At -8 °C, each unit of electricity used becomes more than two and a half times as much heat. The value published at -15 °C, above the nominal size, comes from a separate test: we do not join the two points into a curve. At -30 °C, the console still heats with a COP above 1, but at reduced capacity. In a large room exposed to the cold, we recommend keeping a backup, the existing baseboard or another source, for extreme nights.

Placing the console in a large room

A console heats from a low point, and its location determines how the air covers the room. We preferably place it in the centre of the longest wall or under the main window, on an outside wall, as close as possible to the outdoor unit. In a long room, we check that the air reaches the far end, and we say so if it does not.

The front of the console must stay clear. A sofa pushed against the unit or a curtain covering it blocks the air and reduces comfort. During the visit, we review the planned layout of the room with you before setting the location.

Summer in a sunroom or a converted garage

Heavily glazed rooms build up heat from the sun, and a converted garage under a poorly insulated roof warms up quickly. In cooling, the console posts a SEER2 of 20.2 over the season and an EER2 of 12.5 at full load in hot weather. At the same time, it removes moisture from the air, which condenses on the coil and flows out through the drain. The variable-speed compressor slows down once the room is comfortable and holds the set point with long, steady cycles, which are better at drying the air.

The refrigerant and the ratings, in brief

A heat pump moves heat instead of producing it with a resistance element: in winter, the refrigerant captures heat from the outdoor air; in summer, the cycle reverses. R-454B is a next-generation refrigerant with a much lower global warming potential than the refrigerants it replaces; classified A2L, mildly flammable, it requires suitable tools and methods, which we apply.

  • SEER2 of 20.2: seasonal cooling efficiency.
  • EER2 of 12.5: cooling efficiency at full load.
  • HSPF2 of 10.3: seasonal heating efficiency, calculated for a reference climate milder than ours; useful for comparing models.
  • COP: heat delivered per unit of electricity; an electric baseboard is at 1.

None of these ratings predicts a bill: in a room converted after the fact, insulation weighs more than anything else.

The $1,704 LogisVert grant

The system is listed in Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program, with $1,704 for the owner of an existing home, according to the list in effect on the installation date. We confirm eligibility before signing and prepare the detailed invoice, model numbers and proof of payment. Our page on the efficient heat pump grant summarizes the program's conditions.

Warranty

Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.

Keep the detailed invoice: it shows the model numbers of the console and the outdoor unit and serves as the reference throughout the coverage period.

Installation, step by step

  1. Visit. Load calculation, assessment of the floor, wall and window insulation, choice of wall, check of the electrical panel capacity.
  2. Installing the console. At the bottom of an outside wall, level, with the front clear, as close as possible to the outdoor unit.
  3. Lines and drain. A single sealed opening, often directly behind the console, and a line cover to finish the outdoor run. The drain follows a continuous slope to the outside; on a slab below grade, a small pump may be needed.
  4. Outdoor unit. Wall bracket or ground stand, above the snow line, clear of roof runoff and away from bedroom windows, including the neighbours'.
  5. Electrical. The system needs a dedicated circuit; if the panel must be adjusted, the written quote says so.
  6. Commissioning. Leak test, evacuation, checks in heating and cooling, explanation of the settings.

Maintenance

The console's filter is at the front, accessible without a stepladder: rinse it every two weeks in season. In a converted garage or a sunroom, where dust and pollen get in more easily, check it more often and vacuum around the unit. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coils, drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost and a short pause in heating are normal. Our cleaning service takes over when you prefer to hand off the annual visit.
