Heat at floor level, in rooms where a wall unit has no place

A wall-mounted heat pump is installed high on a clear wall. Some rooms do not have one: an attic bedroom whose walls slope from halfway up, a basement bedroom with low windows, a sunroom that is almost entirely glass. The Floor Console Heat Pump ARCOAIRE D5FSFA | 9,000 BTU - R454B sits at the bottom of the wall, often under the window, where the baseboard used to be. The D5FSFAH09XAK console is paired with the D5CSHAH09AAK outdoor unit, with a variable-speed compressor and R-454B refrigerant.

Its certified ratings are 27.3 SEER2, 15.2 EER2 and 10.9 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation under ENERGY STAR ID 3556048, and its certificate still lists heating capacity at -30 °C.

The rooms a console makes possible

The console solves the cases where people gave up on a heat pump for lack of a location. In an attic bedroom, the only vertical surface is the knee wall under the slope: the console fits there naturally. In the basement, a bedroom with high, narrow windows rarely offers a clear wall near the ceiling, but always has a lower wall. In a sunroom, glass takes up almost everything; the console goes under a window.

It also suits a bedroom built over a garage, whose floor stays cold all winter, and any room where you prefer not to mount anything high up, for looks or to keep a wall free for artwork or a bookcase.

Heat where you feel it

A wall unit blows from top to bottom, and warm air, being lighter, tries to rise back up. The console does the opposite: it sends warm air out at floor level, from where it rises gently through the room. Feet and floor warm up first, and that is exactly where discomfort is felt in a cold room.

Placed under a window, the console also counters the cold draft that slides down the glass in winter, as radiators and baseboards used to do. The result is a room that is more even from floor to ceiling, without a layer of warm air stagnating up high.

A small size chosen on purpose

The 9,000 BTU size is meant for a closed room: a bedroom, an office, a small sunroom, a basement playroom. In a well-insulated 4 ½ apartment, it easily tempers a bedroom; in a heavily glazed or poorly insulated room, it covers a smaller area. The load calculation done during the visit confirms the size.

A unit too large for a bedroom short-cycles: it heats quickly, stops, starts again, and in summer it cools without drying the air. A correctly sized console runs for long periods at low speed. The variable-speed compressor slows down when the room reaches the set point and holds it smoothly, which matters for sleep.

How the system works

A heat pump moves heat instead of producing it with a resistance element. In winter, the refrigerant captures the heat contained in the outdoor air, even cold air, the compressor concentrates it, and the console releases it into the room; in summer, the cycle reverses and the heat is rejected outdoors.

R-454B is a next-generation refrigerant with a much lower global warming potential than the refrigerants it replaces. It is classified A2L, meaning mildly flammable, and handling it requires suitable tools and methods, which we apply. For the occupants, nothing changes.

Winter, according to the certificate

The certificate's heating points are measured separately; we report each one as published.

  • 9,800 BTU/h at -8 °C (17 °F), with a COP of 2.71, or 109 % of the nominal capacity.
  • 11,300 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), with a COP of 1.84.
  • 4,700 BTU/h at -30 °C, with a COP of 1.02, or 52 % of the nominal capacity.

At -8 °C, the console delivers more than its nominal size, and each unit of electricity used becomes more than two and a half times as much heat. The value published at -15 °C, higher still, comes from a separate test: we do not join the two points into a curve. At -30 °C, the console is still heating, with a COP slightly above 1, but at reduced capacity. Keep the existing baseboard as backup for the coldest nights; it will stay off the rest of the winter.

Remarkable summer efficiency

In cooling, this pairing posts a SEER2 of 27.3 and an EER2 of 15.2. The first measures efficiency over the whole season; the second, full-load efficiency during the hot hours. These are high ratings: the console uses little electricity to keep a bedroom cool, even under a roof that builds up heat in the afternoon.

It also removes moisture from the air, which condenses on the coil and flows out through the drain. In a basement bedroom or a sunroom, where the air can get heavy in July, this dehumidification often does more for comfort than a few degrees less.

The other ratings, in plain words

The HSPF2 of 10.9 measures seasonal heating efficiency. It is calculated for a reference climate milder than Quebec's: it is useful for comparing models with each other, without predicting a bill. The COP, for its part, indicates how much heat the unit delivers for each unit of electricity at a specific temperature; an electric baseboard is at 1. For our winters, the COP values published at -8 °C and -15 °C are the most concrete indicators. The actual bill then depends on insulation and settings.

LogisVert

This pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size. Our page on the efficient heat pump grant summarizes the program's conditions.

Warranty

Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.

The detailed invoice we give you carries the model numbers of the console and the outdoor unit; keep it, as it serves as the reference throughout the coverage period.

Installation, step by step

  1. Visit. Load calculation, choice of the outside wall, check of the electrical panel.
  2. Console location. At the bottom of an outside wall, often under the window, as close as possible to the outdoor unit to keep the run short. We leave the front of the unit clear: furniture or a curtain in front of the console would hinder air circulation.
  3. Drain. Condensate must flow out by a continuous slope to the outside. In a basement, below grade, a small pump is sometimes needed.
  4. Outdoor unit. Wall bracket or ground stand, above the snow line, clear of roof runoff and away from bedroom windows, including the neighbours'.
  5. Lines and electrical. The lines go through a single sealed opening, in many cases directly behind the console, and a line cover can finish the run. The system needs a dedicated circuit.
  6. Commissioning. Leak test, evacuation, checks in heating and cooling, explanation of the settings.

Maintenance

One advantage of the console: its filter is within easy reach, at the front of the unit, with no stepladder. Rinse it every two weeks in season and vacuum around the console, where floor dust collects. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coils, drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost and a short pause in heating are normal. Our cleaning service takes over when you prefer to hand off the annual visit.
