24 dB(A) at low speed, for a living room where people read at night

In Sainte-Dorothée, some living rooms are lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves from wall to wall. There is no plaster wall left for a wall-mounted unit, and background noise matters as much as temperature: in a room where people read and listen to music, a constant hum stands out more than one degree less. The DURASTAR Standard 12,000 BTU R454B floor console heat pump sits on the floor in front of the only free space, and its low speed is measured at 24 dB(A).

The certificate’s readings

  • Seasonal efficiency of 24.6 SEER2, 12.7 EER2 and 11.0 HSPF2
  • At -8 °C: 9,000 BTU/h, with a COP of 2.88
  • At -15 °C: 8,900 BTU/h, with a COP of 2.50
  • At -25 °C: 4,600 BTU/h, with a COP of 1.42
  • Heating down to -25 °C, with the cold climate designation
  • Airflow of 441 CFM, indoor sound level of 24 to 42 dB(A)

These figures are from certificate AHRI 215359280, as published by NEEP, and the system is ENERGY STAR certified. One detail deserves attention: between -8 °C and -15 °C, the capacity barely moves, from 9,000 BTU/h to 8,900 BTU/h. The room therefore behaves the same through the long temperature range where most of a Laval winter takes place.

What 24 dB(A) changes in a room where people read

A console rarely runs at full speed. Once the room is at temperature, the unit modulates down to its low speed, measured at 24 dB(A), the level of a quiet room. The difference shows most in the evening, when the house goes quiet: the fan becomes a steady background sound instead of an abrupt start every twenty minutes.

If the room is bigger than planned

We size around 18,000 BTU/h per 1,000 square feet, adjusted for insulation, glazing, ceiling height and how open the room is to the rest of the house. A book-lined living room is better insulated than it looks, and the shelves slow down air circulation. If the room opens onto a dining room, the DURASTAR Standard 16,000 BTU R454B floor console becomes the right choice; for a closed room, the 9,000 BTU of the same series is enough.

The LogisVert amount and the file documents

The system is on Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert list under ENERGY STAR ID 3621175, for a grant of $1,080 for the owner of an existing home. The amount follows the list in force on the installation date, and an increased grant applies to some multi-unit buildings. We confirm eligibility before you sign, then prepare the detailed invoice, the indoor and outdoor model numbers and the proof of payment. The Hydro-Québec efficient heat pump grant page summarizes the conditions.

An installation day in a room lined with shelves

The survey, a few days before

We come to measure the available clearance, find the shortest route to an exterior wall and check the panel. That is when the exact spot for the console is decided, based on the fixed shelving and the existing outlets. The survey avoids surprises on installation day, when the books are already out.

Protecting the shelves and the floor

Before the first cut, we empty and cover the bookshelf section next to the opening, and we protect the floor along the whole tool path. Drilling is done with dust extraction at the source. Masonry or plaster dust is the real risk in a room full of paper, more than handling the unit.

The opening and the line route

The lines connect at 1/4 and 3/8 inch and leave through a single opening, behind the console, at baseboard level. Our installations are fully surface-mounted, with no work inside the walls; a finishing cover painted the colour of the baseboard closes the route inside and out.

The condensate drain

In cooling, the unit removes 2.7 pints of water per hour. The drain runs by gravity through the same opening as the lines when the slope is sufficient; otherwise, a condensate pump takes over. The drain line never crosses a storage area.

The dedicated circuit

Power is 220 V, with a minimum circuit ampacity of 12 A, a 15 A breaker and a dedicated circuit. In a 1960s house whose service is still 100 A, we do the load calculation before proposing the installation; a 200 A panel accepts this load easily.

Vacuum and start-up

Once the connections are made, we pull a vacuum, check for leaks, open the charge and run the unit in front of you. We set the fan speeds, show you how to remove the filters and where the low speed setting is, then check the condensate drain before the books go back.

Signs that should not worry you

  • White vapour rises from the condenser during defrost: the frost melts and drains away
  • A three-minute delay on restart protects the compressor
  • Light cracking sounds come from the plastic cabinet as it expands with temperature
  • Heating stops below -25 °C, the manufacturer’s limit

A burning smell, a tripping breaker, a persistent error code or water inside are not on this list: turn the unit off and call for service.

Maintenance, season after season

The filters come out from the front and are rinsed every two weeks during use; in a room full of books and rugs, this also improves air quality. The outdoor unit is kept clear of snow and leaves, and an annual HVAC maintenance covers the coils, the condensate drain and the electrical connections.

AirGreen, from the grant file to start-up

Our family team has been installing heat pumps for more than fifteen years in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore. We hold RBQ licences in ventilation, refrigeration and electricity, we carry $5,000,000 in liability insurance, and the quote is in writing, with no on-the-spot signature. Our projects show the finish we achieve in rooms furnished wall to wall.
