$1,692 from LogisVert when replacing a unit at the end of its life

In Longueuil, a dining room with a full-width patio door on one wall loses its heat at the bottom, along the threshold. When the annual maintenance concludes that an old unit will not make it through the next winter, the math changes: replacing it while the grant is in force costs less than repairing twice. The DURASTAR Standard 16,000 BTU R454B floor console heat pump sits at the foot of the patio door and is on Hydro-Québec’s list.

The values that make this model eligible

  • Seasonal efficiency of 23.8 SEER2, 12.5 EER2 and 13.5 HSPF2
  • At -8 °C: 14,100 BTU/h, with a COP of 2.75
  • At -15 °C: 13,100 BTU/h, with a COP of 2.16
  • At -25 °C: 8,000 BTU/h, with a COP of 1.57
  • Heating down to -25 °C, cold climate designation, 500 CFM

These data come from certificate AHRI 215359286, published by NEEP, and the system is ENERGY STAR certified. The 13.5 HSPF2 is the most telling value here: it measures heating efficiency over a whole season, not at a single temperature, and it is what separates this unit from the one it replaces.

The grant listed for this model

The system is listed under ENERGY STAR ID 3621181 for a grant of $1,692 for the owner of an existing home. The amount follows the list in force on the installation date, and an increased grant applies to some multi-unit buildings. We confirm eligibility before you sign; the Hydro-Québec efficient heat pump grant page lists the documents to provide.

Replace now rather than repair twice

We size around 18,000 BTU/h per 1,000 square feet, adjusted for insulation, glazing, ceiling height and how open the room is to the rest of the house. A heavily glazed dining room open to the kitchen calls for this size; if the room is closed, the 12,000 BTU of the same series is enough.

From removing the old unit to start-up

Removal and refrigerant recovery

The day starts with recovering the old system’s refrigerant, done by the rules, then removing the indoor unit and the condenser. The existing brackets and openings are inspected: some are reused, others are sealed.

The console in front of the patio door

The unit, 31.26 x 7.87 x 24.45 inches, sits on the floor along the threshold, next to the door opening. The airflow sweeps the bottom of the glass and cuts off the cold draft that falls onto the floor. We keep the strip in front of the grille clear, curtains included, and check that the door swings open without touching the cabinet.

Lines, drain and the 20 A circuit

Connections are 1/4 and 1/2 inch, fully surface-mounted, with no work inside the walls, under a finishing cover. Condensate drains by gravity or through a condensate pump. The 35.04 x 13.46 x 26.50 inch outdoor unit needs 220 V, a minimum circuit ampacity of 18 A, a 20 A breaker and a dedicated circuit.

Start-up and the first maintenance

  • A three-minute delay on restart protects the compressor
  • White vapour rises from the condenser during defrost
  • Heating stops below -25 °C, the manufacturer’s limit

A burning smell, a tripping breaker, a persistent error code or water inside call for a shutdown and a service call. After that, the filters are rinsed every two weeks, the outdoor unit is kept clear of snow, and an annual HVAC maintenance takes over; our cleaning service takes care of the coils and the condensate pan.

For more than fifteen years, AirGreen has been working as a family HVAC business in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore. We hold RBQ licences in ventilation, refrigeration and electricity, and we carry $5,000,000 in liability insurance. Taking away the old unit is part of the job.
