How capacity at -15 °C changes everyday life
A heat pump whose capacity drops sharply in extreme cold quickly leaves baseboard heaters to take over, and the savings disappear during the most expensive weeks of winter. With 11,000 BTU/h at -15 °C, this system continues heating a medium-sized living area well beyond the first cold spells. Baseboard heaters remain useful, but mainly during the coldest nights and in enclosed rooms that the wall-mounted unit's airflow does not reach.

Replacing an old unit or starting from scratch: lines, electrical requirements, and placement
Whether you are replacing an existing wall-mounted unit or installing your first heat pump, the same checks apply.
A 1/2-inch gas line
This system uses 1/4- and 1/2-inch lines, whereas the Sirius Heat 12,000 BTU with R-454B uses a 3/8-inch gas line. This detail matters during a replacement: existing lines can only be reused if their diameters match and they are in good condition. In that case, cleaning and testing are included; otherwise, we install new lines. The lines are precharged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 82 feet, a maximum elevation difference of 33 feet, and an addition of 0.16 ounces of refrigerant per foot beyond the precharged length.
The indoor unit
The wall-mounted unit measures 31.57 x 7.87 x 11.61 inches and weighs 18.7 pounds. With this system, its sound level ranges from 24 to 42 dB(A), and its airflow reaches 291 CFM at the highest setting. The vertical louver oscillates automatically, while the horizontal direction is adjusted manually. The remote control also offers Follow Me, Turbo, Silence, the Clean function, which cleans and dries the indoor coil, a timer, and freeze protection at 8 °C. The unit displays an alert code in the event of a refrigerant leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar indicates that its indoor units are compatible with the DR24VINT2 24 V interface, which allows the addition of a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat.
The outdoor unit
The condenser measures 31.69 x 12.99 x 21.81 inches, weighs 74.0 pounds, and produces 56 dB(A). It includes a base pan heater and a Golden Fin anti-corrosion coating. We place it above the snow line, away from bedroom windows, on a wall bracket anchored to the structure or on a ground stand. DuraStar recommends leaving the unit powered on continuously when the outdoor temperature is 0 °C or lower.
Electrical requirements
208-230 V power supply, 15 A MCA, and a 15 A circuit breaker on a dedicated circuit. During a replacement, we verify that the existing circuit meets these requirements before reusing it.
R-410A refrigerant

What is normal
- White vapor during defrosting, lasting five to ten minutes, along with a pause in indoor heating.
- A three-minute delay before the compressor restarts.
- A slight refrigerant hiss and plastic cracking sounds during temperature changes.
