The Main Living Area Heated at 23,000 BTU/h at -15°C
The living room, open kitchen, and dining room account for most of the activity in a home, and therefore most of its heating consumption. The DURASTAR Sirius Heat Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 24,000 BTU - R410A is designed for this main living area. Its AHRI certificate assigns it a capacity of 23,000 BTU/h at -15°C, and it continues heating down to -30°C. It qualifies for a $2,268 LogisVert rebate.
Its certified ratings are 22.3 SEER2, 12.5 EER2, and 10.3 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold climate designation.
Certificate values
- At 8°C: 26,000 BTU/h, range from 9,499 to 27,412 BTU/h, COP of 3.00
- At -8°C: 18,900 BTU/h nominal capacity, up to 23,737 BTU/h maximum capacity, COP of 2.38
- At -15°C: 23,000 BTU/h, COP of 1.80
- At -30°C: up to 9,900 BTU/h, COP of 1.02
- Cooling: 23,000 BTU/h, range from 4,619 to 26,610 BTU/h
These values come from certificate AHRI 210568101, published by NEEP. The maximum capacity of 23,737 BTU/h at -8°C and the capacity of 23,000 BTU/h at -15°C show that the unit retains most of its capacity during typical January cold spells.
Why we recommend it for living areas
With this system, the published sound level of the indoor unit ranges from 35 to 47 dB(A). Its lowest setting is therefore more audible than that of several other DuraStar wall-mounted models. In a living room or kitchen, where ambient noise is already present, this difference goes unnoticed. For a bedroom, we recommend a unit with a quieter setting instead. The fan offers three settings of 382, 459, and 601 CFM, enough to circulate air throughout a large open-concept area.
The very broad cooling range extends from 4,619 to 26,610 BTU/h. The unit can therefore run gently during mild evenings and ramp up significantly during heat waves. The ECO/GEAR function limits cooling consumption, while the Follow Me function adjusts the temperature according to where the remote control is located.
R-410A or R-454B for a 24,000 BTU unit
DuraStar also offers a 24,000 BTU Sirius Heat using R-454B. It has an HSPF2 rating of 13.3, compared with 10.3 here, 24,000 BTU/h at -15°C, a LogisVert rebate of $2,760, and a refrigerant with a global warming potential of 470, compared with 2,088 for R-410A according to ENERGY STAR. The R-410A model presented here uses a non-flammable, well-known refrigerant and offers a wider lower-end cooling range. We compare the two options with you, including installed price and rebate.
The $2,268 LogisVert rebate
The system carries ENERGY STAR ID 2410687 and qualifies for assistance of $2,268 for an owner of an existing home, according to the list in effect on the installation date. An enhanced rebate may apply in certain multi-unit buildings. We confirm the amount before signing. For the general conditions, see our page on the Hydro-Québec efficient heat pump rebate.
A 135.5-pound condenser and a 35 A breaker: preparing for an installation of this size
A 24,000 BTU unit requires more preparation than a smaller model. Here are the points we address before installation.
The electrical circuit
The system requires a 208-230 V power supply, with an MCA of 25 A and a 35 A breaker, on a dedicated circuit. The conductor size and protection are determined according to these values and the applicable code. In an electrically heated home, we calculate the service load before confirming the project.
The outdoor unit
The condenser measures 37.24 x 16.14 x 31.89 inches and weighs 135.5 pounds. We prefer a ground stand or stable base above the snow line. Its sound level of 62 dB(A) requires a reasonable distance from bedroom windows and neighbouring terraces, an important consideration in the densely populated areas of Montreal and Laval. The base pan heater and Golden Fin anti-corrosion coating are standard. DuraStar recommends leaving the unit powered on continuously at 0°C and below.
Refrigerant lines
The lines are 3/8 and 5/8 inch, pre-charged for 25 feet, and can reach 164 feet, with a maximum elevation difference of 82 feet. Beyond the factory charge, 0.32 ounces of refrigerant must be added per foot. This length provides considerable flexibility for placing the condenser in the least conspicuous location on the property. The installation remains fully exposed, without work inside the walls, and existing lines of the correct diameter can be cleaned and tested for reuse.
The indoor unit
The wall-mounted unit measures 42.60 x 9.21 x 13.27 inches and weighs 30.0 pounds. It is mounted to the framing, with ceiling clearance for air intake and a drainage slope for condensate. The vertical louver oscillates automatically; the lateral direction is adjusted manually. It also includes Sleep, Turbo, Silence, Gentle, and Clean functions, a timer, and 8°C freeze protection. An alert code appears in the event of a refrigerant leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar states that its indoor units are compatible with the 24 V DR24VINT2 interface, which accepts a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat.
What is normal
- A five- to ten-minute defrost cycle in cold weather, with white vapour at the condenser.
- A three-minute delay when the compressor restarts.
- Light hissing sounds and plastic cracking noises during temperature changes.
A tripped breaker, unusual odour, or water leaking indoors requires shutting off the unit and calling our repair service.
Maintenance
Clean the indoor filters every two weeks, keep the condenser clear, and schedule annual HVAC maintenance for the coils, drain, and electrical connections.
