In a newer or well-renovated home, the building envelope already does much of the work. Heat loss is low, and what matters most becomes the cost of each BTU produced. The DURASTAR Standard Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 12,000 BTU - R410A delivers a certified COP of 2.41 at -15 °C, the highest at this temperature among the 12,000 BTU DuraStar wall-mounted heat pumps we offer. It also qualifies for a $1,200 LogisVert rebate.
Its certified ratings are 23.1 SEER2, 13.0 EER2, and 10.8 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation and operates in heating mode down to -25 °C.

These values come from certificate AHRI 207787131, published by NEEP. Certified data stops at -15 °C; according to the DuraStar manual, Standard models provide heating down to -25 °C.
Why efficiency matters in a well-insulated home
In a poorly insulated home, extreme-cold capacity is the limiting factor: the unit must compensate for significant heat loss. In an airtight, well-insulated home, the heating load is lower and more consistent. A 12,000 BTU heat pump will often cover a larger open-concept area there than elsewhere, and its COP directly determines the electricity bill. At -15 °C, this system produces nearly two and a half times as much heat as a baseboard heater using the same amount of electricity.
For sizing, we start with approximately 18,000 BTU/h per 1,000 square feet, then adjust based on insulation, windows, orientation, and ceiling height. In a newer home, the adjustment is often downward, making this size suitable for spaces that would usually be matched with a larger unit. Baseboards or the existing heating system remain in place for extreme cold and temperatures below -25 °C.
Summer comfort
In cooling mode, the certified range is 4,009 to 14,057 BTU/h. In an airtight home, where humidity can easily build up in summer, extended operation at low speed helps keep the air dry. The ECO/GEAR function reduces consumption in cooling mode, while Sleep mode adjusts the setpoint overnight.
The $1,200 LogisVert rebate
The system carries ENERGY STAR ID 2410733 and qualifies for a $1,200 rebate for owners of existing homes, according to the list in effect on the installation date. New or renovated home: installing a 12,000 BTU unit properly
A high-performance building envelope deserves a careful installation. Here are the elements we plan.
The indoor unit
The wall-mounted unit measures 31.57 x 7.87 x 11.61 inches and weighs 18.7 pounds. With this system, its sound level ranges from 25 to 42 dB(A), and its fan offers three speeds of 153, 194, and 291 CFM. We select a wall that allows the airflow to travel across the longest dimension of the space. The vertical louver oscillates automatically; the lateral direction is adjusted manually using the adjustment rod. The remote offers Follow Me, Turbo, Silence, Gentle, the Clean function for the indoor heat exchanger, a timer, and freeze protection at 8 °C. An alert code appears in the event of a refrigerant leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar states that its indoor units are compatible with the DR24VINT2 24 V interface, which allows them to connect to a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat.
Preserving the building envelope's airtightness
In a high-performance home, the line passage through the wall must be carefully sealed to prevent air and water infiltration. Our installations are fully exposed, with no interior wall opening other than the line passage, and an exterior finish cover can be added.
Refrigerant lines
The system uses 1/4- and 1/2-inch lines, precharged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 82 feet and a maximum elevation difference of 33 feet. Beyond the factory charge, 0.16 ounces of refrigerant is added per foot. The 1/2-inch gas line must be checked if you plan to reuse existing lines: they must match these diameters, and their cleaning and testing are then included.
The outdoor unit
The condenser measures 30.12 x 11.93 x 21.85 inches, weighs 63.7 pounds, and produces 53.5 dB(A). It includes a base pan heater and an anti-corrosion coating. We install it above the snow line, on a support anchored to the structure or on a ground stand. DuraStar recommends keeping it powered at all times at 0 °C and below.
Electrical requirements
208-230 V power supply, 13 A MCA, and a 15 A circuit breaker on a dedicated circuit. This low requirement integrates easily with most residential electrical panels.
R-410A refrigerant
R-410A is a non-flammable, widely proven refrigerant. According to ENERGY STAR, its global warming potential is 2,088, compared with 470 for the R-454B used in next-generation units; we can present both options.
What is normal
- A defrost cycle lasting five to ten minutes in cold weather, with white vapour from the condenser.
- A three-minute delay when the compressor restarts.
- A slight hissing sound and plastic cracking noises during temperature changes.
An indoor water leak, a persistent error code, or a tripped circuit breaker requires shutting off the unit and scheduling a service visit.
Maintenance
Clean the indoor filters every two weeks, clear the condenser, and schedule annual HVAC maintenance. Our wall-mounted heat pump cleaning service covers the coils, drain, and connections.
