A 24,000 BTU unit designed first for summer, with effective supplemental heating

Not every home needs a heat pump designed for -30 °C. When the existing heating system works well and the priority is cooling a large room during heat waves, the DURASTAR Standard Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 24,000 BTU - R410A offers the greatest cooling reserve among our DuraStar 24,000 BTU models: up to 27,841 BTU/h according to its certified range. In winter, it reduces heating costs for a good part of the season.

Its certified ratings are 21.0 SEER2, 13.0 EER2, and 8.5 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified, but without the cold-climate designation. It operates in heating mode down to -25 °C and appears on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list with a $870 rebate, a more modest amount than that offered for cold-climate models.

These values come from certificate AHRI 207787133, published by NEEP. The certified data stops at -15 °C, and the DuraStar manual indicates an operating limit of -25 °C in heating mode for Standard models.

Who this model is right for

We recommend it when cooling is the priority: a large south- or west-facing living room, a room with extensive glazing, or a finished basement that becomes humid in summer. It is also suitable for homes where the primary heating system provides satisfactory performance and the heat pump is used to reduce energy bills in the fall, spring, and during mild winter days. At 8 °C, with a COP of 3.14, every kilowatt-hour consumed provides more than three kilowatt-hours of heat.

If heating during extremely cold weather is your priority, we would instead direct you toward a cold-climate model: the Standard 24,000 BTU with R-454B or the Sirius Heat models retain more of their capacity in winter, have a higher HSPF2 rating, and qualify for a larger rebate. Its 8.5 HSPF2 rating is also the lowest in our DuraStar wall-mounted selection. We prefer to say this clearly so your choice matches your actual needs.

Cooling a large room

With 24,000 certified BTU/h and a reserve of up to 27,841 BTU/h, the unit quickly catches up with heat accumulated at the end of the day. The 13.0 EER2 rating, measured at 35 °C, confirms good efficiency during the hottest days. The ECO/GEAR function then reduces consumption in cooling mode, while the Gentle function redirects the airflow when it becomes too direct.

The $870 LogisVert rebate

The system carries ENERGY STAR ID 2410731 and appears on the LogisVert list with an $870 rebate, according to the list in effect on the installation date. Large room, large condenser: the steps to a successful installation

A 24,000 BTU unit requires careful preparation, regardless of its intended use.

The indoor unit

The wall-mounted unit measures 42.60 x 9.21 x 13.27 inches and weighs 30.0 pounds. With this system, its sound level ranges from 28 to 48 dB(A), and its fan offers three settings of 382, 459, and 601 CFM. We secure it to the framing on a wall that allows the airflow to cover the room, with a drainage slope for condensate, which is abundant in summer. The vertical louver oscillates automatically; the horizontal direction is adjusted manually. The remote also offers Follow Me, Sleep, Turbo, Silence, the Clean function, a timer, and freeze protection at 8 °C. An alert code appears in the event of a refrigerant leak. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar indicates that its indoor units are compatible with the 24 V DR24VINT2 interface, which accepts a third-party Wi-Fi thermostat.

The outdoor unit

The condenser measures 37.25 x 16.13 x 31.88 inches, weighs 124.8 pounds, and produces 60 dB(A). We install it on a ground stand or stable base, above the snow line, away from bedroom windows and neighboring decks. The base pan heater and corrosion-resistant coating come standard, and DuraStar recommends keeping the unit powered continuously at 0 °C and below.

The refrigerant lines

The lines are 3/8 and 5/8 inch, precharged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 164 feet and a maximum elevation difference of 82 feet. Beyond the precharge length, 0.32 ounces of refrigerant is added per foot. This length provides considerable flexibility for positioning the condenser away from living areas. The installation remains fully exposed, without opening an interior wall, and a finished line set cover can be added.

Electrical requirements

208-230 V power supply, 22 A MCA, and a 30 A circuit breaker, on a dedicated circuit. We check the electrical service capacity and available panel space during the site visit.

R-410A refrigerant

R-410A is a nonflammable, widely used refrigerant. According to ENERGY STAR, its global warming potential is 2,088, compared with 470 for the R-454B used in new-generation units.

What is normal

• A five- to ten-minute defrost cycle in cold weather, with white vapor at the condenser and a pause in indoor heating.
• A three-minute delay when the compressor restarts.
• Reduced heating capacity during extremely cold weather, followed by heating shutdown below -25 °C: your primary system then takes over.
• A slight hissing sound and plastic cracking noises.

An indoor water leak, a persistent error code, or a tripped circuit breaker requires shutting off the unit and calling our repair service.

Maintenance

Clean the indoor filters every two weeks, especially during the cooling season. Keep the condenser clear and schedule annual HVAC maintenance for the coils, drain, and electrical connections.
