Top Floor, Finished Attic, Glass-Walled Rooms: A 24,000 BTU Unit for Wide Temperature Swings
Some rooms experience two extremes. Under the roof, an attic bedroom becomes a furnace in July and cools quickly in January. A glass-enclosed room or heavily glazed living room gains a great deal of heat from the sun and loses just as much at night. The DURASTAR Standard Wall-Mounted Heat Pump | 24,000 BTU - R454B handles these swings with plenty of capacity in both directions: up to 27,000 BTU/h in cooling and up to 32,700 BTU/h in heating at 8 °C, according to its certified operating range.
Its certified ratings are 23.5 SEER2, 13.0 EER2, and 10.0 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold climate designation, operates in heating mode down to -25 °C, and qualifies for a $2,688 LogisVert rebate.
Certified capacities
- Cooling: 24,000 BTU/h, range of 9,700 to 27,000 BTU/h
- At 8 °C: 25,000 BTU/h, range of 11,300 to 32,700 BTU/h, COP of 3.08
- At -8 °C: 22,400 BTU/h, COP of 2.37
- At -15 °C: 17,800 BTU/h, COP of 2.15
- At -25 °C: up to 11,000 BTU/h, COP of 1.54
These figures come from AHRI certificate 215359290, published by NEEP. At -8 °C, the unit still delivers more than 90% of its nominal capacity. This is the temperature around which a significant part of winter unfolds in southern Quebec.
Summer under the roof
A finished attic room accumulates heat from the roof all day. In the late afternoon, the cooling load can far exceed what the floor area suggests. With a certified capacity of 24,000 BTU/h, a reserve of up to 27,000 BTU/h, and an EER2 rating of 13.0, which measures efficiency at 35 °C, the system stays in control during heat waves. The ECO/GEAR function can then reduce cooling consumption as the heat subsides.
Winter: a clear backup-heating plan
The Standard 24,000 BTU heats efficiently down to -15 °C, with a COP of 2.15 at that temperature. Its capacity then gradually decreases, and it stops heating below -25 °C, its operating limit. In an attic room, often heated only by baseboard heaters, we therefore check that they are working and set a few degrees below the heat pump's setpoint. They will activate only during very cold weather.
If you want to minimize baseboard use, the Sirius Heat 24,000 BTU with R-454B maintains 24,000 BTU/h at -15 °C and heats down to -30 °C. The Standard, however, offers better seasonal cooling efficiency, at 23.5 SEER2 versus 22.3, and a better COP at -15 °C. We compare the two with you based on the room's actual use.
The $2,688 LogisVert rebate
This system is listed under ENERGY STAR ID 3621185, with a $2,688 rebate for the owner of an existing home, according to the list in effect on the installation date. An enhanced rebate may apply in certain multi-unit buildings. We confirm the amount before signing and prepare your application. For details, see our page on the Hydro-Québec efficient heat pump rebate.
Planning the installation of a 24,000 BTU unit in an attic or glass-walled room
These spaces impose particular constraints. We address them before installation rather than during the installation itself.
Finding the right wall
The wall-mounted unit measures 42.60 x 9.21 x 13.27 inches and weighs 30.9 pounds. Under a sloped ceiling, there must be a sufficiently tall section of vertical wall to accommodate the unit and leave clearance above it for air intake. In a glass-walled room, available solid wall space can be limited; we choose the wall that allows the airflow to sweep across the glazed surface without blowing directly onto occupants. The vertical louver oscillates automatically, while the lateral direction is adjusted manually during commissioning.
Condensate
In cooling mode, a unit of this size removes a great deal of water from the air. In an attic, the drain must be planned carefully: gravity drainage through the exterior wall whenever possible; otherwise, a condensate pump, always specified in the quote.
The outdoor unit and lines
The condenser measures 37.24 x 16.14 x 31.89 inches, weighs 122.1 pounds, and produces 60 dB(A). We install it on the ground or on a support anchored to the structure, above the snow line. The refrigerant lines are 3/8 and 5/8 inch, precharged for 25 feet, with a maximum length of 164 feet and a maximum elevation difference of 82 feet, more than enough to connect an attic to the ground. Beyond the precharge, we add 0.32 ounces of refrigerant per foot. The installation remains fully exposed, and a finished line-set cover can protect the lines along the facade.
Electrical requirements
208-230 V power supply, 24 A MCA, and a 25 A breaker on a dedicated circuit. We verify the electrical service capacity and available panel space during the visit.
Everyday comfort
Indoor sound levels range from 21 dB(A) in Silence mode to 54 dB(A) in Turbo mode. The fan offers four speeds: 383, 459, 587, and 759 CFM. Features include Follow Me, Sleep, Gentle, Active Clean, Turbo, and 8 °C freeze protection, useful for a space that is rarely occupied in winter. R-454B, an A2L refrigerant, comes with a factory-installed leak detector. Wi-Fi is not built in; DuraStar offers a separately sold Wi-Fi adapter module, and the DRSTAT101 wall thermostat is compatible.
What is normal
During defrosting, white vapor escapes from the condenser and heat distribution stops for a few minutes. After a shutdown, the compressor waits three minutes before restarting. Below -25 °C, the heating shutdown is specified by the manufacturer. A light hissing sound or plastic cracking does not indicate a malfunction. However, an indoor water leak, a persistent error code, or a tripped breaker requires a service visit.
Maintenance
Clean the indoor filters every two weeks during the season, clear snow from the condenser, and schedule annual HVAC maintenance. In an attic, checking the drain is part of every visit.
