The 60 in galvanized round pipe is the basic building block of a ventilation duct system: it is what connects the elbows, takeoffs and outlets to one another. Available from 4 to 16 in in diameter, it is used for the branches of a forced-air system as well as for air exchanger ducts or fan exhaust.

A straight duct that keeps air moving

An efficient system starts with straight runs of the right diameter, properly aligned and properly sealed. Each section is 60 in long and is cut with tin snips to fit the exact length between two fittings. The sections slide into one another; point the joints in the direction of airflow.

Diameters and sheet metal thickness

  • 4, 5 and 6 in: 32 gauge sheet metal
  • 7, 8, 10 and 12 in: 28 gauge sheet metal, thicker
  • 14 and 16 in: for higher-airflow main ducts

The size corresponds to the duct’s nominal diameter. Choose it based on the collar of the unit or fitting you are connecting to, and keep the same diameter along the whole branch, except where a reducer is planned.

Good installation practices

Fasten each joint with sheet metal screws, then seal it with aluminum tape or mastic: a leaky duct sends heated air into the walls and the basement. Support the lengths with straps and insulate any run that passes through an unheated space. Cut edges are sharp: wear gloves.

01 · What it is for

The straight run of your ventilation ducts

Between two fittings, the straight pipe carries the air: well sized and well sealed, it moves air without losses.

  • Supply branches of a forced-air system (furnace, central heat pump)
  • Air exchanger (HRV) ducts between the unit, the rooms and the outdoors
  • Exhaust from a bathroom fan or an in-line fan
  • Extending or replacing an existing run
60 in sectionsA handy length to work with in a basement, cut to size with tin snips.
Gauge by diameter32 gauge on 4 to 6 in, 28 gauge on 7 to 12 in: the heavier sheet goes on the larger sizes.

04 · Before installing

What to know before installing

  • The size is the nominal duct diameter: it must match the elbows and fittings.
  • Fasten every joint with sheet-metal screws, then seal it with foil tape or mastic.
  • Insulate ducts running through unheated space to prevent condensation and heat loss.
  • Cut with tin snips and deburr: cut edges are sharp, wear gloves.

06 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 32 and 28 gauge?

The lower the number, the thicker the sheet. 28 gauge is stiffer; here it is used on 7 to 12 in diameters.

How do I cut a section to length?

With tin snips, following a line marked all around the pipe. Deburr the edge before fitting the section.

Does the pipe need insulation?

Yes, whenever it runs through an attic, a crawl space or an unheated garage, and on the fresh-air and exhaust ducts of an air exchanger.

Can you install it?

Yes. Our crews install ventilation and forced-air ducts across Greater Montréal under our RBQ ventilation licence.
