A unit that has reached the end of its life, replaced for greater efficiency and reliability
At AirGreen , we regularly receive calls from customers whose wall-mounted heat pumps have stopped working after several years of service. In this specific case, in Lachine , a customer contacted us after noticing that their Fujitsu unit was no longer starting at all, despite several reset attempts.
The unit, already over 12 years old, had been showing signs of fatigue for some time: poor heating performance, irregular start-ups and abnormal noise from the external compressor.
Diagnosis: Defective compressor and refrigerant leak
Upon our arrival on site, we carried out a complete assessment of the HVAC system .
The diagnosis quickly confirmed two major problems:
-
R410A refrigerant leak at an aging weld on the suction line.
-
Defective compressor , unable to maintain the pressure necessary for the thermodynamic cycle.
After several electrical and continuity tests, we found that replacing the compressor would not be economically viable, given the age of the system and the cost of older generation Fujitsu parts.
Step 1: Safely remove the existing unit
Before any replacement operation, our team carried out a complete recovery of the refrigerant using an approved device, in accordance with Canadian environmental standards.
We then carefully dismantled:
-
The wall-mounted indoor unit ,
-
The outdoor condenser ,
-
Wall brackets ,
-
And the copper fittings connecting the two modules.
The whole thing, visible in the photo, was sent to our workshop for recycling and responsible disposal of the electronic and metal components.
Step 2: Preparing the site for the new installation
The exterior wall had an old opening for the refrigeration ducts. We filled it in and sealed it properly to accommodate the new line.
The corroded wall brackets were replaced with a weather-resistant galvanized assembly , suitable for conditions in the Montreal area.
Inside, we checked the power supply (wiring, circuit breaker and grounding) to ensure full compatibility with the new equipment.
Step 3: Installing the new Midea 12,000 BTU heat pump
The customer chose to replace their old system with a Midea 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump, a modern DC inverter model offering:
-
Superior energy efficiency (SEER 23),
-
Quiet operation ,
-
And a heating capacity down to -25°C .
We installed the new unit on anti-vibration mounts and evacuated the circuit before injecting the original refrigerant charge.
Each fitting has been tested using an electronic leak detector to ensure the system is completely leak-proof.
Step 4: Commissioning and Calibration
Once the system was in place, we performed a full performance test :
-
Measured blowing temperature: 7.1°C in cooling mode.
-
Stabilization time: less than 3 minutes.
-
Power consumption in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.
Operation was smooth, with no vibration or abnormal noise. We also trained the customer on how to use the remote control and best practices for preventative maintenance.
Step 5: Ecological management of old equipment
The old Fujitsu condenser , metal brackets and copper were transported to our warehouse for sorting and recycling.
AirGreen ensures that every HVAC system replacement is carried out with complete respect for the environment — gas recovery, metal recycling and responsible disposal of electronic components.
Result: restored comfort and energy savings
The client immediately noticed a reduction in noise and improved thermal stability in the condo.
Thanks to the inverter technology of the new Midea model, energy consumption is reduced by approximately 35% compared to the old system.
