A service call for an aging wall system
In Côte-des-Neiges , a customer contacted us about a breakdown on their Carrier wall-mounted air conditioner, which they had installed for over ten years. The symptom: the unit was no longer producing cold air, despite the operating indicator light being on. The unit, located in a small Montreal apartment, served as their primary source of air conditioning during the summer.
Our AirGreen team responded quickly to assess the situation and restore the system to working order, while ensuring its energy efficiency was improved.
Complete diagnosis: refrigerant leak and clogged fan
From the first observations, several signs indicated a lack of refrigerant:
-
The unit blew lukewarm air even in cool mode.
-
The coils exhibited partial frost after a few minutes of operation.
-
The outdoor compressor (installed on the balcony) was running continuously without reaching the required temperature.
After a thorough inspection, our technicians confirmed a micro-leak at the flare fitting of the liquid line. In addition, the internal fan was covered in dust , reducing airflow and contributing to poor heat exchange.
AirGreen intervention: leak detection, recharging and partial refurbishment
The intervention was carried out in three specific stages:
-
Leak detection and repair using UV tracer and nitrogen pressure test.
-
Replacement of flare joints and tightening of fittings according to Carrier manufacturer standards.
-
Deep cleaning of the indoor unit , including the turbine, condensate tray and washable filters.
-
Complete recharge with R410A refrigerant , calibrated with electronic scale.
Once the system was powered back up, the air temperature leaving the unit quickly dropped to 9°C , indicating a return to optimal performance.
Result: restored comfort and extended device life
After the intervention, the customer was able to enjoy rapid and constant cooling . The compressor returned to a normal operating cycle, and power consumption was reduced thanks to the correction of system overload.
We recommend annual preventative maintenance , especially for older Carrier wall-mounted units, to avoid performance losses due to dirt or recurring micro-leaks.
