When a brick wall meets Midea performance: a service call from AirGreen
At AirGreen , we were recently called to work in an elegant duplex in Outremont , where a Midea wall-mounted air conditioner installed high up was refusing to respond properly to commands. The unit, strategically placed at the top of a brick-walled staircase, was supposed to ensure consistent comfort in the open-concept space on the ground floor. However, over the past few weeks, the owner had noticed a drop in performance and an abnormal noise every time it was started.
Diagnosis: difficult access, but expertise assured
This type of high-rise wall installation—above a stairwell—is always a challenge. Access requires the use of lightweight scaffolding and the utmost caution to avoid contact with the adjacent art frames and brick walls. After an initial operational test, our technician quickly noted:
-
Low airflow even at maximum speed.
-
An intermittent vibrating noise , suggesting an unbalanced or dirty fan.
-
A slight seepage of water under the facade, indicating a possible problem with condensate drainage.
Based on our experience with the Midea Blanc R32 series units, we immediately undertook a full internal inspection.
Step 1: Cleaning and unblocking the condensate drain
Units installed high up are particularly susceptible to dust accumulation and water stagnation in the condensate tray. After removing the front cover, we found a drain pipe partially blocked by a wet organic deposit.
➡ Solution: Complete rinsing with diluted peroxide and purging with compressed air to ensure smooth drainage.
Step 2: Rebalancing the Tangential Fan
The vibrating noise was coming from the fan roller , where a dust deposit had created an imbalance. We disassembled, cleaned, and repositioned the cylinder. A laser inspection confirmed the perfect alignment of the motor and fan.
Step 3: Check the indoor temperature sensor
The customer also mentioned inconsistent control: the room would get too cold before the unit would shut off. Upon checking the thermistor sensor , we found a slightly corroded connector, likely due to condensation.
➡ Immediate replacement of the sensor and resealing of the connector with dielectric silicone.
Step 4: Refrigeration circuit check and performance test
Finally, we performed a nitrogen pressure test and R-32 refrigerant level check. The result: no leaks detected and the charge was compliant. After restarting, the airflow became powerful again , the blowing temperature reached 11°C after three minutes, and the noise level dropped to 21 dB —in line with Midea specifications.
Regained comfort and a reassured customer
After our interventions, the client immediately noticed the difference:
“The unit feels like new. I can't hear anything anymore, and the temperature is perfect throughout the stairwell.”
We have taken the time to explain good maintenance practices:
-
Clean the filter every 3 to 4 weeks .
-
Leave the “Dry” function active for about ten minutes after stopping on humid days.
-
Schedule an annual inspection before the summer season.
