Repair of an Amana central heat pump in Côte-des-Neiges

A typically Montreal balcony intervention

At AirGreen , we were contacted for an Amana central heat pump repair in a duplex in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighborhood of Montreal. The client reported that the system was blowing air at room temperature, without ever reaching the cooling setpoint. The outdoor unit, installed under a wooden balcony, was well protected from the elements, but this configuration also presented certain ventilation and maintenance challenges.

Inspection and initial findings

The Amana unit, a central model mounted on wall brackets , showed clear signs of lack of maintenance :

  • accumulation of dust and lint on the front grille;

  • limited air clearance under the balcony;

  • some damp patches on the wall, a sign of possible condensation.

Inside, the owner had an Amana electric furnace connected to the same system, used as an air handler for air conditioning distribution.

Diagnosis: A problem with compressor pressure and performance

During the initial test, we noted:

  • correct voltage (240 V);

  • fan in normal rotation;

  • but no pressure variation in the refrigeration circuit , which indicated an inactive or blocked compressor.

Using a multimeter confirmed that the compressor was receiving the electrical command , but was not drawing any current —a classic symptom of a faulty start capacitor .

Repair carried out: replacement of the capacitor and complete check

After turning off the power, we removed the side panel to access the capacitor. It showed an obvious bulge on the head , indicating an internal failure. We replaced the part with a genuine Amana capacitor of the same capacity and voltage.

Then we have:

  • cleaned the electrical terminals and tightened the connections;

  • checked the continuity of the starter relay;

  • cleaned the condenser fins with a soft blower;

  • confirmed the integrity of the wall fixings and the metal support.

Upon restart, the compressor resumed operation immediately. The operating pressures balanced at 265 psi on high and 120 psi on low, perfectly within the manufacturer's specifications.

Result: comfort and efficiency restored

Ten minutes after restarting, the indoor air temperature dropped to 11°C , and the house returned to its usual coolness. The customer was impressed by the speed of the diagnosis and the precision of the intervention , typical of our AirGreen approach.

We took advantage of the visit to recommend to the client:

  • annual cleaning of the condenser , even if it is sheltered;

  • to leave a minimum clearance of 60 cm around the unit to improve air circulation;

  • a preventive inspection in the spring before the first heatwave.
