Complete diagnosis and rapid repair of a faulty central unit
At AirGreen , we were recently called for a Goodman central heat pump repair in a single-family residence in Saint-Bruno , on the South Shore of Montreal . The customer contacted us after noticing that their air conditioning system was no longer producing cold air despite the exterior fan apparently working properly. This is a common situation at the beginning of the season, often linked to a compressor or refrigerant charge problem .
Initial inspection: a compressor running in a vacuum
Upon our arrival, our certified technician performed a complete inspection of the outdoor condenser , a Goodman GSX series model, typical of central installations serving multiple zones via ductwork. The unit, well maintained but about ten years old, appeared intact at first glance.
Preliminary observations:
-
The condenser fan was operating normally.
-
No frost or excessive condensation on refrigerant lines.
-
Abnormal pressures detected during measurement with pressure gauges .
-
Irregular compressor noise, indicating a possible internal mechanical problem .
These clues pointed the diagnosis towards a partial pressure drop or a blocked expansion valve .
In-depth diagnosis: slow leak confirmed
After turning off the power and securing the area, we used an electronic leak detector and a UV tracer to inspect the refrigeration circuit. Result: a microleak detected at the base of the condenser coil , a slightly corroded solder point.
This type of leak is particularly insidious—it develops slowly over years, reducing performance without causing an immediate complete shutdown.
Intervention: repair, recharge and calibration
Once the leak is located, we have:
-
Bled the system to recover the remaining refrigerant.
-
Cleaned and re-soldered the defective section with silver solder, compliant with CSA standards.
-
Tested for leaks under nitrogen pressure.
-
Recharged the system with the precise amount of R-410A , according to the manufacturer's specifications, Goodman.
-
Checked evaporation and condensation pressures and temperatures , ensuring optimal performance.
Finally, we cleaned the condenser with a biodegradable product to restore full heat transfer efficiency.
Result: performance and comfort restored
After these repairs, the Goodman central heat pump returned to its nominal efficiency . The air blown inside was 11°C cooler than before our arrival—a clear sign of restored efficiency. The client noticed an immediate difference in ambient comfort and temperature stability.
AirGreen maintenance tips to avoid breakdowns
To extend the life of this type of system, we recommend:
-
A complete maintenance twice a year (spring and fall).
-
Regular cleaning of the outdoor condenser , often clogged with leaves and debris.
-
Checking the interior air filter every month.
-
Inspection of refrigerant pressures every two years.
Preventive maintenance helps avoid performance losses, excess energy consumption and costly repairs.
