Repair of a Goodman central heat pump in Ville Mont-Royal

A central heat pump at a complete standstill: rapid intervention by AirGreen in Ville Mont-Royal

At AirGreen , every service call is unique, but they all have one thing in common: the need to act quickly to restore occupant comfort. This is what happened recently in Town of Mount Royal , where a customer contacted us after their Goodman central heat pump completely shut down in the middle of July.

Context: a faulty outdoor unit on a high balcony

The installation involved a Goodman central heat pump located on a condo balcony on the top floor of a modern building. The outdoor unit, exposed to wind and temperature fluctuations, had stopped working, leaving the apartment without air conditioning for two days.

Upon arrival, our technicians noticed that the condenser fan was no longer spinning and that no compressor sound was being heard—a clear sign of a power supply or control board problem .

Step 1: precise on-site diagnosis

The diagnosis took place in three methodical stages:

  • Checking the supply voltage : The circuit breaker dedicated to the outdoor unit had tripped, indicating an overvoltage or internal short circuit.

  • Wiring and Connection Inspection : A slightly exposed power wire was rubbing against the metal housing of the condenser, causing intermittent contact.

  • Start capacitor check : the part showed visible deformation and swelling typical of failure.

The combination of these two anomalies— damaged wiring and a defective capacitor —perfectly explained the complete shutdown of the heat pump.

Step 2: Securing and replacing defective parts

Our technicians immediately disconnected the main power supply , repaired the damaged section of cable and added a high temperature insulating sleeve to prevent any risk of future friction.
Next, we replaced the starting capacitor with an original Goodman model, which met the exact specifications of the device (45/5 µF, 440V).

Before closing the unit, a continuity test confirmed that power was flowing properly to the fan motor and compressor.

Step 3: Restart and complete calibration

Once the repair was completed, the heat pump was powered back up. The outdoor fan started running immediately, followed by the compressor , which started up smoothly and quietly.
We then have:

  • Measured the pressure of the R410A refrigerant , perfectly stable.

  • Checked the discharge temperature and cooling delta inside.

  • Confirmed the nominal power consumption of the compressor.

The results confirmed that the heat pump was operating at 100% capacity .

Step 4: Prevention tips for a central heat pump

To extend the life of its equipment, we recommended that the customer:

  • Clean the outdoor condenser at least twice a year (spring and fall).

  • Watch for unusual noises or repeated startup cycles.

  • Periodically check the circuit breaker and avoid any overload on the dedicated electrical circuit.

  • Schedule an annual AirGreen inspection to detect early signs of capacitor and relay wear.

Result: comfort restored and safety assured

A few hours after our intervention, the interior temperature of the condo returned to 22°C , and the heat pump was operating stably and quietly. The relieved client was able to regain the comfort of his space without fear of another breakdown during the heatwave.

Beyond just repairing, our work helped secure the system and prevent more costly damage in the long term.
