A service call for a Trane system with cooling failure
At AirGreen , we are often called upon for emergencies related to central HVAC systems experiencing problems during the summer heat. This was recently the case in Brossard , on the South Shore, where a customer contacted us because their Trane central heat pump was no longer producing cold air, despite a correctly set thermostat and a compressor that appeared to be working.
The work was carried out on a Trane XR14 model, a unit renowned for its robustness, but which requires regular maintenance to maintain its optimal performance. The outdoor unit, installed in a narrow space between two walls, was already showing signs of wear: accumulation of leaves, wet debris and limited air circulation.
Initial diagnosis: performance compromised by the environment
Upon our arrival, our technicians immediately observed:
-
Reduced airflow at the condenser , due to the clutter around the unit.
-
Clogged coils , blocked by leaves and dust.
-
A compressor that started and then stopped after a few seconds, typical of an electrical overload problem or abnormal pressure in the refrigeration circuit.
A thorough diagnosis with our measuring instruments revealed a drop in refrigerant pressure as well as a weakened condenser , two key elements affecting the cooling capacity of the system.
Repair Steps: AirGreen Methodology
Our technicians carried out a complete and methodical intervention :
-
Deep cleaning of the condenser with a biodegradable product to restore heat transfer.
-
Replacement of the defective capacitor , whose capacity (45/5 µF) had fallen to 30% of its nominal value.
-
Nitrogen leak detection - detected on a discharge tube brazing.
-
Solder repair , leak test and recharge of the system with R410A refrigerant .
-
Check operating pressures , subcooling and superheat.
-
Complete compressor and fan start-up test after balancing.
Results: efficiency and reliability restored
After the intervention:
-
The system's performance returned to its original values, with an optimal indoor/outdoor temperature delta.
-
The compressor noise level has stabilized.
-
The client found uniform cooling throughout the house, particularly on the second floor, which is often the most difficult to air condition.
We also recommended clearing the space around the condenser (minimum 60 cm on each side) to prevent future overheating. A protective grille was installed to prevent the accumulation of leaves and debris.
Prevention: How to extend the life of a Trane heat pump
Trane systems are designed to last, but their longevity depends heavily on rigorous maintenance:
-
Clean the coils twice a year.
-
Checking the refrigerant level and the condition of the electrical components.
-
Inspection of interior ducts to ensure there are no air leaks.
-
Replace the filter every 3 months to avoid overloading the indoor fan.
An annual maintenance contract with AirGreen helps ensure optimal operation in all seasons , reduce energy consumption and avoid breakdowns during critical periods.
AirGreen Expertise: precise and certified interventions
This case in Brossard perfectly illustrates the rigor of our approach:
-
