A complete intervention to restore the performance of an aging system
At AirGreen , we know that proper maintenance and accurate repairs can extend the life of HVAC systems by years. Recently, our team traveled to Brossard , on Montreal's South Shore , to work on a Trane XL1200 central heat pump that was no longer adequately heating a long-time client's home.
The context of the call
The owner contacted us after noticing that his Trane heat pump, although robust and renowned for its durability, was producing lukewarm air in heating mode and insufficiently cold air in cooling mode . He also noticed that the outdoor fan was starting irregularly , and that the system seemed to be "forcing" more than usual.
Installed for over ten years against a brick wall typical of single-family homes in Brossard , the heat pump was surrounded by dense vegetation, which partially obstructed the condenser ventilation. These conditions could easily lead to compressor overheating and a drop in energy efficiency .
Inspection and diagnosis
Upon our arrival, our technician carried out a complete analysis of the system :
-
Visual inspection and cleaning
-
The condenser was covered with dust, pollen and plant debris , restricting airflow.
-
Branches were directly touching the upper grille, obstructing heat dissipation.
-
-
Checking the refrigeration circuit
-
Measurement of pressures and temperatures of R22 refrigerant.
-
Results: Abnormal low pressure indicated partial loss of refrigerant.
-
-
Electrical and mechanical analysis
-
Fan capacitor check: capacity weakened to 40% of nominal value.
-
Compressor test: resistance within normal ranges, no short circuit detected.
-
-
Control board test
-
Correct reading of signals, but slight oxidation on the connectors due to ambient humidity.
-
The final diagnosis revealed a minor leak in a coil weld , combined with an aging capacitor and lack of maintenance around the outdoor unit .
Steps of repair
1. Thorough cleaning of the condenser
-
Removal of surrounding vegetation to provide a ventilation space of at least 60 cm all around the unit.
-
Thorough cleaning of the condenser fins using a non-corrosive product and low pressure rinsing.
-
Straightening folded fins to maximize airflow.
2. Repair the leak and recharge with refrigerant
-
Leak detection using a UV tracer and re-welding of the defective joint using a torch and silver solder.
-
Complete vacuuming of the circuit to eliminate all traces of humidity.
-
Recharge the system with a compatible R22 replacement refrigerant , as recommended by Trane.
3. Replacing the starting capacitor
-
Installation of a new 45/5 µF capacitor , calibrated for the XL1200 series motor and compressor.
-
Secure fixing and prime test of the compressor.
-
Checking voltages, currents and phase sequences.
4. Final performance test
-
In air conditioning mode: blowing temperature measured at 8°C , in accordance with original specifications.
-
In heating mode: blowing at 38°C , demonstrating restored energy efficiency.
-
No abnormal noise, vibrations eliminated and pressures stabilized.
Result: efficiency restored and customer satisfied
Thanks to this intervention, the Trane XL1200 heat pump has regained near-optimal performance , despite its advanced age.
Benefits for the customer:
-
Reduced operating noise .
-
Optimized power consumption .
-
Heating and cooling capacity restored .
-
Extending the system's life by several seasons.
The client also benefited from express training on good maintenance practices:
-
Maintain a minimum clearance of 60 cm around the unit.
-
Clean the fins twice a year.
-
Schedule an annual AirGreen inspection to prevent refrigerant loss.
AirGreen expertise in Brossard and on the South Shore
Trane central systems like the XL1200 are renowned for their robustness, but they require precise maintenance and in-depth technical expertise.
At AirGreen , our RBQ-certified technicians, trained to CCQ standards, are fully proficient in repairing and recommissioning Trane heat pumps , whether they use R22 or the new environmentally friendly refrigerants R410A and R32.
Our commitments:
-
Complete diagnosis before any intervention .
-
Original or equivalent manufacturer-approved parts .
-
1 year warranty on replaced parts.
-
Rapid intervention in Brossard, Longueuil, Saint-Lambert, La Prairie and across the South Shore.
An essential reminder for central heat pump owners
Units like the Trane XL1200 , while robust, can lose up to 20% efficiency when dirty or poorly ventilated. Preventative maintenance is therefore essential to:
-
avoid excessive electricity consumption,
-
prevent compressor overheating,
-
and maintain performance season after season.
By entrusting your system to AirGreen – Air Conditioning & Heating , you benefit from local, professional and certified service , adapted to your region and your device.
