A service call in the middle of winter in Laval
On a freezing day in Sainte-Dorothée, Laval, our AirGreen team was called out for a complete breakdown of a Midea heat pump . The customer, concerned that his outdoor unit was no longer starting despite several attempts, had noticed an abnormal noise followed by a sudden shutdown of the system. On site, the snow and cold made the situation urgent: the heating had to be restored quickly.
Precise and methodical diagnosis
At AirGreen , we always start with a complete inspection of the HVAC system . After disconnecting the power and removing the condenser cover, our technicians noticed that the compressor was not turning on despite the thermostat requesting it to. A visual inspection revealed traces of refrigerant oil around one of the copper fittings, a clear sign of a micro-leak in the refrigeration system .
Using our electronic leak and soap bubble detector, we confirmed the loss of pressure on the discharge line. A wiring inspection also ruled out any electrical anomalies: the relays, contactor, and starting capacitor were in good condition.
Technical intervention: repair and recommissioning
The next step was to completely drain the circuit to repair the damaged section. After brazing the new copper fitting, we performed a nitrogen leak test to ensure there were no leaks.
Once the hermetic system was confirmed, we performed a complete 500 micron vacuum , then recharged the circuit with R410A refrigerant according to Midea specifications.
Before restarting, the compressor and electrical connections were carefully tightened, and the condenser fan was cleaned. We then carried out a complete commissioning : measuring pressures, evaporating and condensing temperatures, and checking superheat and subcooling. The values obtained corresponded perfectly to the manufacturer's standards.
Result: comfort and performance restored
Upon restarting, the customer immediately noticed the difference: the heat pump was operating at full capacity, without abnormal noise or vibration. Within minutes, the house was back to stable and uniform heat , even with an outside temperature of -15°C.
This intervention made it possible to restore the energy efficiency of the system and extend the life of the compressor, which is often put under severe strain during forced restarts in the event of a leak.
AirGreen Tips to Prevent Winter Outages
To avoid this type of situation, we recommend all our customers to:
-
Have your heat pump inspected before the cold season to detect any leaks or weaknesses.
-
Regularly clear snow around the condenser to ensure good air circulation.
-
Watch for unusual noises or excessively frequent cycling, which are often signs of a pressure problem.
-
Call an RBQ and CCQ certified technician , such as AirGreen, at the first signs of failure.
At AirGreen, we combine technical expertise , rigorous execution and compliance with manufacturer standards to guarantee optimal comfort for our customers, whether they are in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore or the South Shore.
