Repair of an Ameristar wall-mounted heat pump in Boisbriand

A double intervention to restore the performance of two HVAC systems

At AirGreen , we were recently called to Boisbriand , on the North Shore of Montreal , for a technical intervention on two Ameristar wall-mounted heat pumps installed side by side. The client, the owner of a single-family home, had noticed that his outdoor units were no longer maintaining a stable temperature, and that a slight burning smell was being felt upon startup.

The intervention quickly revealed a typical case of combined failure : a refrigerant leak on the first unit and an electrical problem on the second.

Complete diagnosis: two devices, two distinct symptoms

Our technicians began by checking the pressures, temperatures, and power supply of both Ameristar units. These observations helped isolate the issues:

  • Unit A : Loss of performance due to an R-410A refrigerant leak , probably caused by a micro-crack at the flare connection.

  • Unit B : Circuit breaker tripped on start-up due to faulty start capacitor .

With both systems installed on the same support and connected to separate interior wall units, a coordinated intervention was required.

Repair steps: precision and AirGreen method

1. Leak recovery and detection

We first recovered the residual gas from the first unit, then used an electronic leak detector to locate the leak. A very fine crack was present at the copper connection.

The next step was to:

  • Cut and resolder the damaged section ,

  • Perform a complete vacuum to eliminate all traces of humidity,

  • Recharge the system with the exact amount of R-410A indicated on the nameplate.

2. Electrical repair on the second unit

On the second heat pump, our technician replaced the start capacitor (45 µF) and tested the compressor to verify its integrity. A continuity measurement and resistance check confirmed that the compressor was still functional.

3. Performance testing and calibration

Both systems were then put back into service simultaneously to verify:

  • High and low pressures ,

  • The discharge and suction temperature ,

  • The overall efficiency in air conditioning and heating mode .

Result: Both Ameristar heat pumps achieved performance levels consistent with the manufacturer's specifications , with an indoor temperature difference of more than 10°C between the air inlet and outlet—a sign of optimal heat exchange.

A measurable result: comfort and stability restored

Thanks to this careful double intervention , the client found complete comfort in his home:

  • Stable temperature in all rooms ,

  • Disappearance of untimely stops ,

  • Reduction of external noise ,

  • And better energy efficiency .

This operation perfectly demonstrates the AirGreen philosophy: never settle for a partial diagnosis, but analyze the entire HVAC system to guarantee a lasting repair.

The importance of regular maintenance of wall-mounted heat pumps

A refrigerant leak or minor electrical failure may seem trivial, but it can cause:

  • Overconsumption of electricity ,

  • Premature wear of the compressor ,

  • And sometimes even a total system failure .

At AirGreen, we recommend our clients to:

  • Have the refrigerant pressure checked at least once a year.

  • Clean the internal coils and filters before each season.

  • Ensure that external supports are stable and free from vibrations.

These simple measures extend the life of systems and prevent costly repairs.
