A Fujitsu Halcyon heat pump stopped under a balcony
At AirGreen , we regularly work in Sainte-Julie , on the South Shore of Montreal , on Fujitsu Halcyon wall-mounted heat pump systems that experience performance drops or complete shutdowns. This was recently the case for a client whose outdoor unit, installed under a balcony, had stopped providing any cooling at the beginning of June.
The owner, concerned about a possible compressor failure, contacted us after noticing that the indoor ventilation was working , but the blown air remained lukewarm. The system had been installed approximately 10 years ago and had not been maintained for more than two seasons.
Initial diagnosis: restricted airflow and faulty condenser
Upon arrival, our team immediately noticed several risk factors:

The Fujitsu Halcyon unit was installed under a wooden balcony structure, which significantly limited vertical airflow .

The condenser was partially clogged with dust and debris, typical of a gravel area.

The compressor no longer started, although the current was correctly reaching the control module.
Our technicians then performed a thorough diagnostic using a multimeter and a starting ammeter. The test quickly confirmed that the compressor's starting capacitor was faulty—a common failure on this generation of Halcyon models.
Repair steps performed
The intervention took place in several specific phases:

Safely shutting down the electrical circuit.

Disassembly of the side cover to access the electrical compartment.

Replacement of the defective capacitor with a genuine Fujitsu part compatible with the Halcyon 12,000 BTU model.

Complete cleaning of the condenser using AirGreen biodegradable cleaner to restore optimal heat transfer.

Checked the R-410A refrigerant charge : the level was adequate, no leaks were detected.

Restart the system and check the blowing and suction temperatures.
Upon restart, the compressor engaged normally and the system began producing air at 8°C — a clear sign of restored performance.
Adjustments and recommendations for the client
We took the time to explain to the owner the importance of the condenser location for the longevity of the system. Under a balcony, the heat pump operates in a confined space where heat accumulates more easily, which increases the pressure on the compressor and accelerates wear on the electrical components.
Our recommendations:

Clean the condenser twice a season (in spring and late summer).

Clear the space around the unit to promote air circulation.

Plan to move the unit to a more ventilated location during a future patio renovation.

Have the electrical system inspected every 2 to 3 years to prevent capacitor or relay failures.
Result: restored performance and immediate comfort
Once the heat pump was repaired, the house was cool again in less than an hour . The customer expressed relief, happy to have avoided a costly complete replacement. Thanks to our quick and targeted intervention , the Fujitsu Halcyon heat pump will now be able to operate stably for several more seasons.
