Repair of a Gree wall-mounted heat pump in Sainte-Thérèse

A service call on the North Shore for a reduced-efficiency outdoor unit

At AirGreen , we were recently called in for an emergency service call in Sainte-Thérèse , on the North Shore of Montreal . The client, the owner of a brick duplex, had noticed that his Gree wall-mounted heat pump had not been heating efficiently for several days. In the middle of October, when the nights were getting chilly, we needed to intervene quickly to restore stable thermal comfort.

Diagnosis: Loss of performance due to obstruction and minor leak

Upon our arrival, our technician inspected the outdoor unit installed high up on a brick wall. The initial findings were clear:

  • Significant accumulation of dust and pollen on the condenser, reducing heat dissipation.

  • Condensate poorly drained , leaving a visible trace of humidity on the wall.

  • And above all, a lower than normal R-32 refrigerant pressure , a sign of a micro-leak on a flare connection.

Using our electronic detector and a soap test, we located the leak at the suction hose connection . This leak, although minimal, was enough to cause reduced thermal efficiency and an overly frequent defrost cycle.

Intervention: refurbishment and complete recharge of the refrigeration circuit

The intervention took place in several precise technical stages:

  1. Complete cleaning of the Gree outdoor unit :

    • Application of a biodegradable condenser cleaner.

    • Low pressure rinse to avoid damaging the fins.

  2. Repairing the leak :

    • Disconnection of the defective flare fitting.

    • Re-cutting and re-brazing the copper pipe for an optimal fit.

    • Installation of a new flare fitting with reinforced seal .

  3. Pressure test :

    • Nitrogen injection at 300 psi for 20 minutes to validate the seal.

  4. Recharge with R-32 refrigerant :

    • Accurate refill according to Gree specifications (1.25 kg).

    • Superheat and subcooling control via digital pressure gauge.

  5. Heating cycle check :

    • Measurement of a delta T of 24°C between the incoming air and the air blown inside.

    • Observation of smooth and quiet operation of the inverter compressor.

Result: efficiency and durability restored

Following the repair, the Gree heat pump returned to full performance. The customer immediately noticed consistent, even heat throughout his home. Defrost cycles, previously too frequent, returned to a normal rhythm, optimizing electricity consumption.

We recommended:

  • Annual cleaning of the condenser , especially before the cold season.

  • A check of pressures and condensate drain in the spring.

  • The possible installation of a protective roof for the outdoor unit , in order to reduce the accumulation of water and snow on the facade in winter.
