Repair of a Gree wall-mounted heat pump in Plateau-Mont-Royal

A service call in an urban condo: loss of performance on a cramped balcony

In Montreal's vibrant Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood, a client contacted us about a noticeable drop in performance from their Gree wall-mounted heat pump . Installed on a small condo balcony, the outdoor unit suffered from a classic urban problem: dust accumulation and partial obstruction of airflow . This type of compact installation, typical of Montreal apartments, requires special technical attention.

A constrained environment: restricted space and limited ventilation

Our AirGreen technician immediately noticed that the outdoor condenser was installed just a few inches from the wall and protected by a metal guardrail. These conditions often create a recirculation effect of hot air , which prevents the heat pump from efficiently removing heat. As a result, the compressor overheats, efficiency drops, and energy consumption increases.

Step 1: Visual inspection and cleaning of the condenser

After securing the area and moving the balcony furniture, we undertook a complete cleaning of the condenser .
Using a biodegradable degreaser and a low-pressure hand pump , we removed the layer of dust and dirt that had accumulated on the fins.
Such cleaning restores the system's heat exchange capacity , which is essential to its efficiency.

We then checked the condition of the fan and motor: no signs of seizure or imbalance were found.

Step 2: Check the refrigerant pressure and level

Our electronic pressure gauges revealed a pressure slightly lower than the values recommended by Gree , indicating a partial loss of refrigerant.
We then carried out a tracer gas leak test to detect any potential leaks. No release was observed; this was simply a natural loss over time , common after several years of use without preventive maintenance.

A light recharge of R410A was performed to bring the system back to its nominal performance.

Step 3: Functional Testing and Balancing

Once cleaning and recharging were complete, we performed a full performance test :

  • Low pressure : 125 psi

  • High pressure : 405 psi

  • Indoor blowing temperature : 8°C in air conditioning mode

The results were excellent, confirming the complete restoration of the heat pump's performance .

Step 4: Recommendations to the owner

Our technicians took the time to explain to the client some essential best practices for this type of urban balcony installation:

  • Leave at least 30 cm of free space behind and around the condenser to promote air circulation.

  • Clean the condenser screen at least twice a year, especially after spring pollen.

  • Avoid placing objects or fabrics around the unit, including towels or outdoor curtains.

  • Schedule a complete annual maintenance before the summer period to maintain optimal performance.

The customer decided to add their unit to the AirGreen maintenance program , guaranteeing professional follow-up every season.

Result: restored comfort and increased efficiency

Thanks to this meticulous intervention, the Gree wall-mounted heat pump has regained its full efficiency. Cold air is once again circulating quickly and quietly, and the customer noticed an immediate reduction in compressor runtime —a direct sign of energy savings.

This type of balcony intervention demonstrates the technical mastery and flexibility of our AirGreen teams , capable of working efficiently in restricted environments while respecting the strictest HVAC standards.
