Repair of a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump in Sainte-Dorothée

A Sharp unit that no longer cools: a classic well mastered by AirGreen

At AirGreen , we work daily on residential HVAC systems across Greater Montreal, and certain brands often come up in our service calls. This is the case with Sharp , whose Eco Inverter wall-mounted heat pumps are renowned for their performance and durability.
Our team was recently called to Sainte-Dorothée , in Laval , to resolve a cooling failure on a Sharp unit installed along a brick wall typical of residences in the area.


Initial diagnosis: a compressor that starts, but no cold air

The customer reported that his Sharp heat pump appeared to be operating normally—the lights were on, the indoor fan was blowing—but the air remained lukewarm , even after several minutes.
Our technicians quickly identified the characteristic symptoms of a refrigeration cycle problem .
The first checks focused on:

  • the pressure of the R-410A refrigerant ,

  • the evaporation temperature ,

  • and the behavior of the compressor outside .

The verdict was in: the compressor was running, but the circuit pressure was abnormal , a sign of a minor refrigerant leak .


Step 1: Duct Inspection and Leak Detection

By removing the protective grille from the outdoor unit, we were able to access the flare fittings connecting the copper lines. One of them showed slight traces of oil , a classic indicator of a slow refrigerant leak.
To confirm, we performed a nitrogen test at 250 psi , then used an electronic leak detector . Result: the leak was coming from an improperly compressed crimp on the fluid connection.


Step 2: Professional Repair and Tightening

Once the leak was located, our technician:

  1. Recovered residual refrigerant using a recovery station,

  2. Disassembled and re-flared using a tool calibrated for 1/4” copper.

  3. Replaced the sealing ring with an R-410A compatible model,

  4. Tighten to the exact torque recommended by Sharp .

After these steps, a new nitrogen test confirmed a perfect seal .


Step 3: Vacuum draw and precise refill

We then performed a full vacuum draw at 500 microns for 40 minutes.
This process eliminates all traces of moisture in the circuit, preventing the formation of acids that could damage the compressor.
Then we recharged the system with R-410A to the exact mass indicated on the manufacturer's nameplate: 1.15 kg .

The final readings showed:

  • Low pressure : 115 psi,

  • High pressure : 385 psi,

  • Blown air temperature : 10°C after 10 minutes of operation.

Values ​​perfectly in line with the performance specifications of the Sharp Eco Inverter model.


Step 4: Electrical and functional checks

Before concluding the intervention, we inspected:

  • the external electrical connection , protected by a waterproof service box (Infras type),

  • the power wiring between the indoor and outdoor unit,

  • and the communication parameters between the two electronic cards.

No anomalies were detected. The device resumed normal operation, with a smooth and quiet start-up , characteristic of Sharp models equipped with Plasmacluster Ion technology.


Result: efficiency restored and customer satisfied

A few minutes after restarting, the difference was obvious: the heat pump was blowing air at 11°C , the interior temperature was dropping rapidly, and the exterior noise level remained minimal.
The customer was able to see that his energy consumption would return to normal , since the compressor would no longer have to compensate for a loss of refrigerant gas.

We concluded the visit by:

  • recommending annual preventive maintenance ,

  • cleaning the outdoor condenser clogged with leaves and plants,

  • and affixing an AirGreen maintenance label indicating the date of intervention and the type of refrigerant used.


Lessons learned from this repair at Sainte-Dorothée

This intervention demonstrates the importance of having your HVAC system checked at the first signs of a drop in performance .
A minor leak, if not corrected quickly, can:

  • cause the compressor to overheat ,

  • reduce energy efficiency ,

  • and eventually require a complete replacement of the unit .
