A service call on a flat roof in the summer heat
At AirGreen , we were recently called for an urgent diagnosis in Sainte-Julie , on the South Shore of Montreal , concerning a Sharp Inverter wall-mounted heat pump equipped with Plasmacluster technology . Installed on the flat roof of a commercial building, this unit ensured both occupant comfort and temperature stability in a heat-sensitive space.
When we arrived, the heat pump was showing classic symptoms of poor performance : low cold airflow, excessive energy consumption, and unusual noise coming from the outdoor compressor.
Diagnosis: A dirty unit and a pressurized compressor
After a complete inspection of the system , our team noted several elements that needed to be corrected:
-
Condenser fins clogged with dust and debris accumulated on the roof.
-
Damaged refrigeration duct insulation , exposing the line to direct heat from the sun.
-
Slightly low refrigerant level , causing a loss of pressure in the circuit.
-
Unstable outdoor unit support , resting on partially collapsed wooden blocks.
These combined problems significantly reduced system performance, while unnecessarily forcing the inverter compressor to compensate for the loss of efficiency.
Repair steps: rigor, precision and safety
1. Securing and dismantling
We first disconnected the power and secured the roof area. The service panel was removed to check the condition of the electronic boards and internal connections.
2. Deep cleaning of the condenser
Using our biodegradable AirGreen solution , the fins were gently cleaned to restore optimal airflow without damaging the coil surface.
3. Renovation of the insulation and fixing of the support
We replaced the old insulation with a UV-resistant thermal sleeve , then reinforced the base of the support with galvanized aluminum anchors, ensuring perfect stability even in strong winds.
4. Checking the refrigeration circuit
A nitrogen pressure test confirmed the integrity of the circuit. We then adjusted the R410A refrigerant charge according to Sharp's manufacturer's specifications.
5. Electronic control and final test
The Plasmacluster module was tested and found to be fully functional. After reactivation of the system, the temperature and pressure readings stabilized, indicating a return to optimal performance .
Result: restored performance and guaranteed durability
Thanks to this comprehensive intervention, the Sharp heat pump regained its full power. Energy efficiency increased by 18% , the noise level dropped by 6 dB , and occupants immediately felt an improvement in thermal comfort in the offices.
We also advised the client to have a six-monthly preventative maintenance , including:
-
Cleaning coils and filters;
-
Checking air flow and pressures;
-
Inspection of wiring and supports;
-
Testing the Plasmacluster module to maintain optimal air quality.
