A compact installation designed for comfort, stability and the constraints of a balcony
Installing a wall-mounted heat pump in Côte-Saint-Luc in a relatively unobstructed detached house is one thing. Carrying out the same work on the narrow balcony of a residential building, in the immediate vicinity of a patio door, a window, a brick wall and a railing, requires much more precise planning.
For this project, our AirGreen team installed a Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat wall-mounted heat pump in a configuration where every centimetre mattered. The outdoor unit had to be securely supported, given sufficient clearance for proper airflow and positioned so as not to compromise the use of the balcony.
The job-site photograph clearly shows the main features of this installation:
- a balcony with limited dimensions;
- a façade combining light-coloured siding and brick masonry;
- an outdoor unit installed on a raised metal structure;
- anti-vibration mounts beneath the unit;
- refrigerant lines running near the window;
- a metal finish above the opening;
- a railing located directly in front of the airflow area;
- an installation completed without unnecessarily occupying the centre of the balcony.
This type of project clearly illustrates why a heat pump installation should never be reduced to simply mounting two units. Long-term performance depends as much on the equipment selection as on its positioning, stability, drainage, line protection and compliance with the required clearances.
Why the Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat was suitable for this residence
The Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat lineup is intended for homeowners who want both heating and air conditioning with a wall-mounted heat pump suited to cold temperatures.
According to Samsung HVAC, the series is available in several capacities, including 9,000, 12,000, 15,000, 18,000 and 24,000 BTU/h. The manufacturer also indicates low-temperature heating capacity down to approximately -30 °C, depending on the model and the exact combination of indoor and outdoor units.
However, the precise capacity selected for a residence should never be determined solely based on floor area. At AirGreen, we consider in particular:
- the layout of the rooms;
- the level of insulation;
- the number and size of the windows;
- solar orientation;
- the floor of the home;
- air leaks;
- the presence of an existing electric heating system;
- actual cooling and heating needs;
- air circulation between the different areas.
An oversized unit can reach the requested temperature too quickly, operate in short cycles, and control humidity less effectively. An undersized unit, on the other hand, may run continuously during very hot days or periods of extreme cold.
WindFree™ operation: gentler comfort in cooling mode
WindFree™ technology is one of the distinctive features of this Samsung heat pump. In WindFree™ mode, cooled air is dispersed through numerous small openings in the indoor unit, producing more diffuse and less forceful airflow than a direct jet.
Samsung describes this operation as an airflow rate below 0.15 m/s in this mode, corresponding to a sensation of almost still air according to the reference used by the manufacturer.
This feature can be particularly useful when the indoor unit is installed:
- in a living room where occupants remain seated for long periods;
- near a sofa;
- in a bedroom;
- in an open-concept area;
- facing a work table;
- in a home where occupants are sensitive to cold drafts.
The conventional airflow mode remains useful for lowering the temperature quickly. Once the setpoint is reached, WindFree™ mode can then maintain more even comfort without continuously directing a stream of cold air toward occupants.
An elevated outdoor unit rather than one placed directly on the ground
One of the most important details of this HVAC installation in Côte-Saint-Luc is the metal structure beneath the outdoor unit.
We did not simply place the heat pump on the balcony floor. The unit was installed on a rigid, elevated support comprising:
- vertical metal posts;
- a horizontal crossbar sized to support the unit;
- anchor points distributed across the balcony;
- anti-vibration devices placed beneath the heat pump’s feet;
- clearance beneath the unit to facilitate water drainage.
This elevation addresses several practical needs.
Reducing water- and ice-related risks
When a heat pump operates in heating mode, the outdoor unit must periodically run a defrost cycle. The water produced must be able to drain freely.
On a Quebec balcony, a unit installed too close to the floor can end up surrounded by ice or compacted snow. Significant accumulation beneath the unit can interfere with drainage, reduce clearances, and complicate maintenance.
The elevation creates useful space beneath the heat pump and limits direct contact with:
- standing water;
- snow;
- ice;
- debris;
- dirt accumulated on the balcony.
It also facilitates visual inspection of the unit’s base.
Limiting Vibration Transmission
The anti-vibration mounts visible beneath the unit play an important role. Even when an inverter compressor operates quietly, slight vibrations can be transmitted to the building structure if the unit is mounted directly on a rigid surface.
In a condominium, this issue deserves particular attention, since vibrations can sometimes be noticeable in a neighboring unit or in the room behind the exterior wall.
Anti-vibration pads help mechanically isolate the unit from the metal support. However, their effectiveness depends on a complete installation that also includes:
- a level support;
- properly tightened anchors;
- piping that does not put strain on the cabinet;
- adequate spacing between the piping and surfaces;
- the absence of loose metal parts that could resonate.
Preserving the Balcony’s Usable Space
The balcony had to remain functional after the work. We therefore placed the unit near the exterior wall while avoiding an improvised installation in the center of the area.
This arrangement preserves a passage in front of the patio door and reduces overall clutter. The heat pump also remains accessible for:
- cleaning the coil;
- checking the connections;
- pressure and temperature measurements;
- electrical diagnostics;
- the possible replacement of a component;
- preventive HVAC maintenance.
A unit tightly wedged into a corner may seem unobtrusive at the time of installation, but become difficult and costly to service. We therefore seek a balance between aesthetics, technical clearances, and future accessibility.
The Importance of Clearance in Front of the Fan
On this project, the railing is in front of the outdoor unit. This constraint had to be analyzed before selecting the support’s height and position.
The outdoor unit’s fan must be able to discharge air without encountering an obstacle that is too close. Excessive air recirculation can reduce the unit’s efficiency, particularly under demanding outdoor conditions.
The height of the structure helps position a significant portion of the discharge area above the solid section of the railing. This positioning therefore limits obstruction while keeping the unit within the balcony’s permitted space.
For an installation like this in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, or the South Shore, we systematically check for:
- railings;
- side walls;
- balcony partitions;
- privacy screens;
- outdoor furniture;
- awnings;
- neighboring dwelling units;
- air outlets;
- doors and windows.
Furniture and decorative panels added after installation can also compromise clearances. We therefore recommend never completely concealing an outdoor unit in an enclosed structure.
A discreet line route in a complex area
The refrigerant lines, communication wiring, and drainage must connect the indoor unit to the outdoor unit. In this case, they run along the area near the window and descend behind the appliance.
This part of the installation requires great care. Poor workmanship can lead to:
- water infiltration;
- premature deterioration of the insulation;
- insufficient drainage;
- vibrations in the piping;
- an uneven visual finish;
- lines vulnerable to impact or weather;
We ensure that the wall opening is properly sealed and that the lines are supported without creating stress on the copper connections.
Drainage should never be treated as a minor detail
In cooling mode, the indoor unit removes moisture from the air. This condensation must be drained continuously.
When a natural slope is possible, we generally favor gravity drainage. The line must maintain a sufficient slope, avoid upward sections, and end in an appropriate location.
An improper slope can cause:
- gurgling sounds;
- water accumulating in the drain pan;
- odors;
- overflowing;
- damage to the interior wall;
- a leak near the window or patio door.
Where gravity drainage is not possible, a condensate pump may be necessary. It must then be selected and installed in a way that minimizes noise and keeps it accessible for maintenance.
A heat pump suited to Montreal-area winters
The MaxHeat designation indicates that this series is designed to provide heating in more demanding winter conditions than a standard heat pump.
Samsung states that certain Max Heat versions maintain their rated heating capacity at approximately -15 °C and continue to provide heating down to approximately -30 °C, although actual capacity and performance vary depending on the model, outdoor temperature, and installation conditions.
This does not necessarily mean that the existing electric baseboards must be removed. In many homes in Côte-Saint-Luc and Greater Montreal, they remain useful as supplemental heating or as a backup solution.
A common strategy is to use the wall-mounted heat pump as the primary heating source for much of the winter, while keeping the baseboard heaters in certain enclosed rooms or during periods of extreme cold.
Subsidy Eligibility: Verify the Exact Combination
Some heat pump systems may qualify for financial assistance programs, but eligibility does not depend solely on the commercial name displayed on the unit.
It may be linked to several factors:
- the exact indoor unit number;
- the exact outdoor unit number;
- the certified combination of the two units;
- the recognized heating capacity;
- the applicable climate certification;
- the type of building;
- the purchase and installation date;
- the program’s current documentation requirements.
It is therefore unwise to promise a subsidy solely because a heat pump bears the MaxHeat or ENERGY STAR® designation. Samsung also indicates that only certain models or combinations are certified, and that sizing and component matching remain essential.

What This Côte-Saint-Luc Installation Teaches Condo Owners
Obtain approval before work begins
In a condominium, the unit owner does not always have complete control over the exterior wall, balcony, or masonry. These elements may be considered common elements or restricted-use common elements.
Before installation, it may be necessary to obtain:
- authorization from the condo association;
- approval of the location;
- confirmation of the pipe-cover color;
- instructions regarding drilling;
- noise limits;
- drainage requirements;
- proof of the contractor’s insurance;
- confirmation regarding municipal permits.
Starting work without approval can lead to delays, costly modifications, or a request to relocate the unit.
Do not choose the location based solely on appearance
An outdoor unit placed too low, too close to a wall, or behind a decorative screen may experience operating problems. Conversely, a unit installed without regard for aesthetics may interfere with balcony use or create tensions with the condo association.
The location must be assessed according to several criteria simultaneously:
- manufacturer clearances;
- air circulation;
- water drainage;
- access for servicing;
- pipe length;
- vibration transmission;
- balcony use;
- condominium rules;
- the visual impact from the street or neighboring homes.
Plan maintenance from the design stage
The outdoor coil gradually accumulates dust, pollen, leaves and urban debris. On a balcony, it may also be affected by fibers from privacy screens or nearby dryers.
We recommend keeping the area around the unit clear and carrying out periodic inspections. Do not clean the fins with a high-pressure jet, as they can easily become deformed.
The indoor unit also requires:
- cleaning the filters regularly;
- inspecting the condensate pan;
- cleaning the blower wheel when necessary;
- checking the drain line;
- more thorough wall-mounted heat pump maintenance when odors, reduced airflow or visible buildup appear.
Mistakes we seek to avoid
Several mistakes occur frequently in balcony installations:
- placing the unit directly on the floor;
- directing the fan toward a wall that is too close;
- blocking the unit with a privacy panel;
- neglecting defrost water drainage;
- securing the lines without support;
- using an insufficiently rigid support;
- forgetting anti-vibration isolators;
- blocking access to the service panel;
- placing the unit in the path of the patio door;
- drilling through the façade without a durable sealing method;
- selecting the capacity based solely on the number of square feet.
The true quality of a wall-mounted heat pump installation is often evident in these less visible details.
