An indoor unit precisely integrated above a window, between the ceiling and an accent wall
In this residence in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, the space available for the new SAMSUNG WindFree™ MaxHeat wall-mounted heat pump required particularly precise planning. The indoor unit had to be installed above a window, very close to the ceiling and just a few centimetres from a blue side wall. The objective was clear: improve the room’s heating and cooling without taking up a useful wall, interfering with the curtains, or creating a visually bulky installation.
The photograph taken after commissioning shows a SAMSUNG unit carefully aligned with the top of the window. Its white casing blends into the main wall, while its right end comes close to the accent wall. This proximity required several checks even before the mounting plate was secured:
- the upper clearance required for air intake;
- the lateral space required to service the unit;
- the position of the window stud;
- the routing of the refrigerant lines;
- the required slope for the condensate drain;
- the air discharge range throughout the room;
- the ability to open the front panel and remove the filters.
In properties in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, as elsewhere in the West Island of Montreal, rooms often feature large windows, accent walls, curtains, bookcases, or furniture occupying the most accessible surfaces. The best technical location is therefore not always the most obvious at first glance.
Our work involved using the space above the window while maintaining effective air circulation. The unit had to be high enough to distribute air throughout the room, but not so high that it would be compressed against the ceiling. It also had to remain a safe distance from the right wall so that the casing, filters, and internal components would remain accessible.
An installation designed around the room’s actual architecture
One of the most interesting aspects of this project is integrating the unit into an architecturally complex area. On the left, there is the window and curtain rod. On the right, a blue accent wall forms a pronounced angle. Above, the ceiling slopes slightly toward this junction.
In this type of configuration, moving the unit a few centimeters can completely change the result.
If installed too close to the window, the unit could interfere with the curtain rod or make opening the curtains less convenient. If installed too close to the side wall, access to the components would become difficult. If installed too close to the ceiling, the upper air intake could be restricted.
We therefore positioned the wall-mounted heat pump so that it precisely occupies the available space without looking like it was added as an afterthought. This approach is important in modestly sized rooms: a unit that is poorly centered or installed too low immediately draws attention and can detract from the layout.
The final placement also allows the lower louver to direct air toward the occupied area rather than straight at an obstacle. This helps distribute the temperature more evenly throughout the space.
The purpose of the clearance above the unit
A wall-mounted indoor unit draws in air primarily through its upper section. The air then passes through the filters and heat exchanger before being redistributed throughout the room.
Insufficient space between the ceiling and the unit can cause several problems:
- a reduction in airflow;
- noisier operation;
- a reduction in heating or cooling capacity;
- faster buildup of dirt;
- difficult access to the filters;
- less uniform air circulation.
During every HVAC installation, we check the clearances required by the manufacturer for the model in question. We do not rely solely on the installation’s overall appearance.
In this project in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, the unit is installed high on the wall, but space remains visible above the casing. This clearance allows the unit to breathe properly and makes it easier to open its front panel.
A discreet finish with no visible piping around the unit
No long stretch of piping is visible on the main wall. This finish makes the unit look like a natural part of the room.
Depending on the building’s configuration, the lines may exit directly behind the unit or be routed toward an adjacent wall. They generally include:
- two copper refrigerant pipes;
- their thermal insulation;
- a communication cable;
- the conductors specified by the manufacturer;
- a drain for condensate removal.
The route must be planned before drilling. In an area above a window, the lintel, structural components, and concealed elements in the wall must be avoided.
We must also consider the natural direction of the connections. Copper lines cannot be sharply bent to accommodate a location chosen solely for aesthetic reasons. An appropriate bend radius protects the copper from crushing and reduces stress on the connections.
SAMSUNG WindFree™ MaxHeat and low-velocity air distribution
The desired comfort depends not only on the displayed temperature. The way air is distributed directly influences how the room feels.
SAMSUNG WindFree™ technology is designed to limit the presence of a continuous stream of cold air. When rapid cooling is required, the main louver directs air into the room. Once the desired temperature is reached, the system can use the façade’s numerous micro-openings to maintain comfort with gentler airflow.
This feature can be appreciated when the unit is installed:
- in a bedroom;
- near a sofa;
- facing a work table;
- in a small living room;
- near a frequently occupied area.
In this installation, the unit is located above a window, preserving the other walls for furniture. The louver can distribute air into the room, while WindFree™ mode can help reduce the sensation of a direct draft after the requested temperature has been reached.
A heat pump designed for the winter conditions of Greater Montreal
The WindFree™ MaxHeat model is not intended solely for summer cooling. It is designed to provide heating at low outdoor temperatures, an important requirement in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, where winds from the lake area can intensify the feeling of cold during the winter.
A heat pump extracts thermal energy from the outdoor air and transfers it indoors. As the temperature drops, the system adjusts its compressor speed according to demand.
Inverter technology offers several advantages:

- fewer abrupt starts;
- power modulation;
- generally quieter operation at partial load;
- more efficient use of energy than resistive heating used alone.
Certain combinations of SAMSUNG WindFree™ MaxHeat 12,000 BTU are designed to operate in heating mode down to approximately −30 °C and may offer efficiency of approximately 24 SEER2. However, these figures must be associated with a specific combination of indoor and outdoor units.
The photograph does not make it possible to confirm the unit’s exact capacity. We therefore avoid automatically assigning a capacity, efficiency rating, or AHRI number based on its exterior appearance. This information is verified using the nameplates and technical documentation for the installed system.
The technical decisions that ensure comfort, reliability, and ease of maintenance
Sizing is not based solely on floor area
A homeowner may be tempted to choose a heat pump based on a simple BTU-per-square-foot rule. This method does not account for several determining factors.
To select the appropriate capacity, we consider, among other factors:
- the area that is actually open to airflow;
- insulation quality;
- the number and type of windows;
- solar orientation;
- the room’s floor;
- ceiling height;
- air infiltration;
- the layout of doors and hallways;
- existing heating sources;
- the room’s daily use.
A unit that is too small may run continuously without meeting demand during periods of extreme cold. A substantially oversized unit may reach the temperature quickly in summer, reduce its dehumidification cycles, and provide less consistent comfort.
In Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, we encounter buildings from several eras: older homes, renovated properties, condominiums, and newer residences. Two rooms of the same size may therefore require different capacities.
The mounting plate must be perfectly level
Before installing the indoor unit, we attach a metal plate to the wall. This component supports the unit and determines its final alignment.
A slightly tilted plate can cause:
- an improper position of the condensate pan;
- irregular drainage;
- vibrations;
- a cabinet that is not properly supported against the wall;
- an unbalanced appearance in relation to the ceiling or window.
In this installation, the lines of the ceiling, window, and accent wall make any alignment error particularly noticeable. Our technicians therefore took the necessary measurements before fastening the unit to ensure it was straight and stable.
The goal is not merely aesthetic. The unit’s level also contributes to proper management of the water produced during air conditioning.
Condensate management in an installation above a window
In cooling mode, the indoor coil becomes cold and removes some of the moisture contained in the air. This water is collected in a pan and then directed to a drain.
Since the unit is located above a window, a condensate leak could damage:
- the framing;
- the drywall;
- the paint;
- the curtains;
- the floor beneath the opening.
The drain must therefore be installed with a continuous slope and without any pinched sections. After making the connections, we check the flow before considering the installation complete.
Common drain-related errors
Several problems can be avoided during installation:
- a reverse slope retaining water;
- a pipe flattened behind the unit;
- an obstructed outdoor outlet;
- an insufficiently tightened connection;
- a drain outlet placed in a problematic location;
- a drain exposed to freezing without adequate planning.
When gravity is not sufficient, a condensate pump may be necessary. However, we prefer natural drainage whenever possible, as it involves fewer mechanical components and generally requires less maintenance.
Sealing the wall penetration
The passage of the lines between the inside and outside must be properly sealed. A neglected opening can become a point of air, moisture, or insect infiltration.
This step is particularly important in the West Island, where winds can intensify infiltration around poorly protected openings.
We pay attention to:
- the sleeve perimeter;
- the protection of the lines;
- the interior and exterior sealing;
- the slope of the passage;
- the finishing around the casing.
A beautiful indoor unit cannot make up for a poorly executed wall penetration. The quality of a heat pump installation is also measured by the parts that become invisible once the work is complete.
Evacuation: an essential step for the compressor’s service life
After the refrigeration lines are installed, the circuit must be prepared according to a rigorous procedure. The pipes must not contain air or moisture before the outdoor unit’s valves are opened.
A professional commissioning includes, among other things:
- preparing the connections;
- the leak test;
- evacuating the system;
- checking that the vacuum holds;
- opening the service valves;
- starting the unit;
- checking temperatures and operation.
Moisture left in the circuit can damage the oil, refrigeration components, and compressor. This procedure cannot be evaluated from a final photo, but it is one of the most important steps of the work.
The temperature displayed during the system check
In the photograph, the unit’s display indicates 64, presumably based on a setting in degrees Fahrenheit. This value corresponds to approximately 18 °C and may be used temporarily during an air-conditioning check to create sufficient demand.
This reading does not necessarily mean that the occupants will maintain this temperature every day. During commissioning, our technicians can adjust the setpoint to confirm:
- the louver opening correctly;
- the compressor startup;
- the remote control response;
- the production of cool air;
- condensate drainage;
- the absence of unusual noise.
Once testing is complete, the temperature can be adjusted according to the occupants’ preferences.
Subsidies: always verify the exact combination
A SAMSUNG heat pump may qualify for financial assistance under Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program, but eligibility does not depend solely on the brand or the WindFree™ MaxHeat name.
The following must be verified:
- the exact indoor unit number;
- the exact outdoor unit number;
- the AHRI reference;
- the recognized heating capacity;
- the installation date;
- the rules in effect at the time of the project.
The capacity used to calculate financial assistance may differ from the rated capacity displayed in the product name. The amount must therefore be determined based on the certified combination.
We recommend keeping the following documents:
- the detailed, paid invoice;
- serial numbers;
- photos of the rating plates;
- the applicable AHRI or ENERGY STAR® reference;
- proof of payment;
- the installation date;
- the property-related documents when required.
Some multi-unit properties may also be subject to specific criteria. Thorough verification before purchase helps avoid basing a decision on a subsidy that would not apply to the application.
Usage tips for maintaining stable comfort
An inverter heat pump operates efficiently when it can modulate rather than undergo constant stops and starts. We generally recommend selecting a comfortable temperature and allowing the system to reach it gradually.
For balanced daily use:
- keep the filters clean;
- do not block the upper air intake;
- leave the louver free to move;
- avoid continuously changing the temperature;
- use the mode appropriate for the season;
- keep the doors open when several zones need to benefit from the same unit;
- set the electric baseboards slightly below the heat pump temperature in winter.
In a room with curtains, you must also ensure that the fabric does not touch the unit or rise in front of the air intake. In this installation, the heat pump was positioned to the right of the curtain rod to limit this risk.
Accessible maintenance despite the elevated position
Since the unit is installed near the ceiling, accessing the filters requires a small, stable stepladder. This height is common for a wall-mounted heat pump, but it should not prevent routine maintenance.
Washable filters should be inspected periodically. The frequency depends on usage, the presence of pets, and the amount of dust in the home.
A clogged filter can cause:
- reduced airflow;
- reduced performance;
- noisier operation;
- a heat exchanger that is more difficult to clean;
- unnecessarily high energy consumption.
More thorough HVAC maintenance makes it possible to clean the heat exchanger, tangential fan, drain pan, and accessible components. This service is particularly relevant when the unit operates year-round for heating and cooling.
