Installation of a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH Triple-Zone Heat Pump in Saint-Jude: Multi-Zone AIRSTAGE Comfort and Seamless Indoor Integration

In Saint-Jude, a triple-zone installation where the positioning of the indoor units makes all the difference

For this installation of a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump in Saint-Jude, our goal was not limited to providing heating and cooling in three distinct areas of the residence. We also had to integrate each indoor unit logically, promote good air circulation, and maintain a clean-looking installation in the living spaces.

The photo taken during the work shows one of the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE wall-mounted units already installed near the ceiling, in a corner of the room. This positioning clearly illustrates a reality that is often underestimated in multizone projects: a few dozen centimeters can significantly change how heated or cooled air is distributed throughout a space.

A triple-zone heat pump is therefore not simply an outdoor unit to which we connect three wall-mounted units. It is a genuine multizone HVAC system, in which every component must be selected and positioned according to the building.

For this installation in Saint-Jude, choosing the Fujitsu Aquila XLTH line made it possible to bring several comfort zones together around a single outdoor platform while taking advantage of the flexibility offered by the AIRSTAGE series.

Fujitsu documentation for the H Aquila series presents outdoor units rated at 18,000, 24,000, 36,000, and 45,000 BTU/h that can be combined with several indoor unit formats. The 24,000 BTU/h outdoor model can serve up to three indoor units, while the higher capacities allow for four or five zones, depending on the configuration.

Why choose three zones instead of one large wall-mounted unit?

In some homes, a single wall-mounted unit may be enough to treat an open-concept area. In others, it quickly creates compromises.

A unit installed in the living room can easily keep that room at the desired temperature while leaving a bedroom at the end of a hallway much warmer in summer or colder in winter. Closed doors, floors, staircases, partitions, and solar exposure often prevent air from being distributed evenly.

With a triple-zone heat pump, we can address three areas much more precisely.

Each indoor unit can be controlled separately. Fujitsu also states that the indoor units in its multi-zone systems can be controlled individually, allowing the temperature of each zone to be adapted to its use.

For occupants, this makes it possible, for example, to maintain:

  • a comfortable temperature in the main living area;
  • a slightly different temperature in the bedrooms;
  • a third setting in an office, basement, or another less frequently used area.

The real advantage is not simply having three remote controls. It is avoiding trying to heat or cool an entire house from a single air-distribution point.

What the photo of the Fujitsu indoor unit installed in Saint-Jude shows

The indoor unit is installed high up, near the ceiling, on a relatively unobstructed wall.

This choice allows the unit to blow air into the room without being immediately blocked by furniture or an obstacle. In the photo, we can also see that the heat pump is installed near a corner, but that it retains enough clearance to open the unit and access the filters.

These are important details for future HVAC maintenance.

An installation that seems very discreet on the first day can become frustrating if the homeowner can no longer easily remove the filters or if a technician has to dismantle part of the ceiling to access the unit.

We therefore always seek a balance between:

air distribution, appearance, line routing, accessibility, and ease of maintenance.

Why we avoid installing a wall-mounted unit directly against the ceiling

A wall-mounted unit needs space to draw in air from the room.

If it is installed too close to the ceiling, airflow at the intake may be reduced and servicing becomes more difficult. It must also be possible to open the front panel to clean or remove the filters.

In this installation, the available space above the unit allows for a clean installation without enclosing the machine.

This rule may seem simple, but it is one of the details we systematically check during a wall-mounted heat pump installation in Saint-Jude, Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, or the South Shore.

The best location is not necessarily the one with the shortest piping

It would always be possible to choose the wall that minimizes the length of the refrigerant lines.

However, this would be a poor way to design a system.

We first analyze how air needs to circulate through the room. Then we determine the cleanest technical route for the refrigerant lines, communication wire, and condensate drain.

With a triple-zone system, this consideration must be repeated three times.

The three indoor units must then be connected to the outdoor unit while taking into account the maximum permitted line lengths, elevation differences, and combinations approved by Fujitsu.

The indoor units do not all necessarily need the same capacity

Another advantage of a Fujitsu multi-zone system is the flexibility of the indoor capacities.

Fujitsu’s tables show several combinations of 7,000, 9,000, 12,000, 15,000, 18,000, or 24,000 BTU/h, depending on the type of unit and the selected outdoor capacity. For an outdoor unit that can support three zones, several distributions are permitted rather than just one scenario with three identical units.

This makes it possible to properly match the units to the rooms.

A small bedroom may require much less capacity than a large living room. Installing three units with the same capacity simply because it is a three-zone system could result in an improper balance.

For this Saint-Jude project, the photo does not make it possible to confirm the exact capacity of the indoor unit shown. We therefore do not infer it simply from its external dimensions.

This is an important distinction when comparing installations: the physical size of a wall-mounted unit does not always make it possible to determine its BTU rating precisely.

Why load calculations remain essential with a Fujitsu multi-zone system

A triple-zone system offers a great deal of flexibility, but flexibility should not be confused with oversizing.

In certain configurations, Fujitsu allows the sum of the rated capacities of the indoor units to exceed 100% of the outdoor unit’s rated capacity. However, the manufacturer specifies that a combination exceeding 100% does not increase the system’s actual output capacity.

In other words, installing more nominal capacity indoors does not automatically create more outdoor capacity.

The manufacturer also specifies that its combination tables are not, by themselves, intended to select system capacity and recommends using its Design Simulator software to select AIRSTAGE H Series equipment.

  • the area of each zone;
  • ceiling height;
  • the number of windows;
  • sun exposure;
  • the insulation level;
  • air infiltration;
  • the floor where the room is located;
  • the actual use of each area.

This approach avoids choosing a system solely according to a simplified “BTU per square foot” rule.

A design focused on cold-weather heating

In Saint-Jude, as throughout Quebec, a heat pump must be evaluated as much for its performance in January as for its efficiency during a hot day in July.

Fujitsu documentation for the Aquila line mentions cold-climate systems capable of operating in heating mode down to -26 °C for the CTEB versions.

This feature becomes particularly appealing in a three-zone installation, since several rooms can benefit from heat-pump heating from the same outdoor unit.

A heat pump does not eliminate the importance of a sound heating strategy, however. The lower the outdoor temperature, the greater the home's heating load. That is why the outdoor capacity selected must match the building rather than simply the number of zones.

Three independent zones, but not three different modes

There is an important nuance that we always explain to owners of a multi-zone system.

Each indoor unit can have its own temperature setpoint, but the entire system must operate in a compatible mode.

Fujitsu specifies that its multi-zone systems provide heating and cooling, but not simultaneously.

This means that if the house is operating in heating mode during the winter, an indoor unit cannot request cooling at the same time.

In most Quebec residences, this limitation is not problematic because the different zones generally require the same mode during the coldest and hottest periods.

The benefit of an inverter compressor with three zones

A multi-zone system does not necessarily operate all three indoor units at full capacity all the time.

A bedroom may reach its temperature quickly, while a larger room continues to require heating. The sun can also cause the load to vary from one zone to another throughout the day.

The inverter compressor used in Fujitsu systems adjusts its operation according to demand rather than operating solely on a traditional on-off cycle.

Fujitsu documentation also mentions built-in protection for the circuits, fan motor, and compressor, as well as a heat exchanger designed to improve corrosion resistance and coil longevity.

For a system designed to operate twelve months a year, these features contribute to more stable operation.

Another advantage: the variety of compatible indoor units

Although the Saint-Jude image clearly shows a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE wall-mounted unit, the Aquila platform is not limited to this type of evaporator.

Fujitsu also offers configurations compatible with Slim Duct units, compact cassettes, and certain Mid Static Duct units.

This option may be useful when a home has several interior layouts.

A wall-mounted unit may be ideal in a bedroom. In an area where the aesthetic calls for a more discreet integration, a ducted unit may sometimes be considered. In other spaces, a cassette may be a better fit.

However, the final selection must always comply with the authorized combination tables.

The indoor unit must be installed level

A wall-mounted heat pump does more than heat and move air. In cooling mode, it also removes moisture from the room.

This moisture becomes water in the condensate pan and must be properly drained through the drain line.

A poorly positioned unit or an inadequate drain slope can cause drainage problems.

That is why, during installation, we check:

  • the unit’s level;
  • the drain connection;
  • the slope of the drain line;
  • the absence of kinks;
  • the tightness of the connections;
  • the drainage before handing the system over to the owner.

The ladder visible in front of the appliance in the photo also reminds us that, when the picture was taken, we were still in the work and inspection phase.

The wall passage behind the unit: a finish that must remain discreet

When an installation allows it, we like to route the lines directly behind the indoor unit.

This method considerably reduces the amount of visible line-set cover in the room.

In an already finished house, however, each penetration must be planned carefully. The wall structure, electrical wires, plumbing, and the route required to the outside must all be taken into account.

A hole a few centimeters too far to the left or right can complicate the rest of the project.

In a three-zone system, coordinating these three penetrations becomes an important part of the project.

Simple mistakes can reduce the quality of an installation equipped with an excellent machine.

When installing a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH three-zone heat pump, we specifically aim to avoid:

  • an indoor unit placed in a corner where air remains trapped;
  • an appliance installed too close to the ceiling;
  • a unit blowing directly toward an area that is uncomfortable for occupants;
  • a drain without sufficient slope;
  • excessively long refrigerant lines without justification;
  • three units sized without taking individual loads into account;
  • an outdoor unit chosen solely according to the theoretical sum of the indoor BTUs;
  • an inadequate explanation of how the heating and cooling functions work together.

These details directly affect long-term comfort.

A successful installation should remain comfortable even when you forget it is there.

The ultimate goal of a good HVAC installation is relatively simple: occupants should not have to constantly intervene to maintain a stable temperature.

The indoor unit visible in this Saint-Jude installation is discreetly mounted high up, away from areas of direct occupancy. Its role is to distribute heating or cooling throughout the room while blending naturally into the building.

In a three-zone system, this same logic must be repeated for each of the three units.

The result is therefore very different from a solution in which a single heat pump attempts to serve the entire house through doors and hallways.

Subsidies: always verify the exact combination installed

Homeowners interested in a Fujitsu heat pump in Saint-Jude naturally want to know what financial assistance is available.

It is important never to assume that a subsidy applies simply because the system bears a well-known brand or operates at low temperatures.

Eligibility generally depends on the exact combination of the indoor and outdoor units, the applicable certifications, and the program rules in effect at the time of installation.

The Fujitsu document provided outlines the permitted technical combinations for the Aquila series, but it is not sufficient to establish an exact subsidy amount for this installation.
