Installation of a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH Triple-Zone Heat Pump in Saint-Louis: Multi-Zone Comfort, Discreet Routing, and a Perfectly Integrated Wall-Mounted Unit

A Fujitsu installation designed to serve multiple areas without cluttering the home

At Saint-Louis, our AirGreen team completed an installation of a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump, paying particular attention to the positioning of the indoor units, airflow, and visual integration into the living spaces.

The photo of this installation clearly illustrates one of the challenges we often face in the field: installing a wall-mounted unit in a transitional space, here immediately adjacent to a staircase, with few architectural elements available to conceal the connections.

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE indoor unit was installed high on the wall, near the ceiling, in an unobstructed area. This positioning allows for efficient air distribution while avoiding encroachment on the usable space around the staircase.

The result is intentionally understated. The unit remains visible, but it blends neatly into a light-colored wall surface, with enough clearance around it to allow for operation, filter cleaning, and future servicing.

In a triple-zone installation, this type of decision must be repeated for each of the three indoor units. The goal is not simply to create three air outlets. It is to build a true whole-home comfort network.

Why a triple-zone heat pump was the right choice for this property

A home with multiple floors or distinct zones rarely has a uniform temperature.

Stairs, hallways, closed bedrooms, open spaces, and exterior walls create very different conditions from one area to another.

A single wall-mounted unit installed in a main room can effectively cool its immediate surroundings, but it will often have more difficulty properly serving another room located behind a door or on a different floor.

With a Fujitsu multi-zone heat pump, each area has its own indoor unit connected to a single outdoor condenser.

Fujitsu documentation for AIRSTAGE H Series Aquila systems presents several outdoor units that can power two, three, four, or five indoor units, depending on the model. The AOUH24KWAS3/AOUH24KWAH3 version is specifically designed to accommodate up to three indoor units, which directly illustrates the principle of a three-zone system.

This configuration makes it possible to distribute heating and cooling more effectively while limiting the number of pieces of equipment installed outdoors.

Individual zoning: a practical advantage in a home with multiple areas

One of the main benefits of the Fujitsu multi-zone system is the independent control of the indoor units.

According to the manufacturer’s documentation, each indoor unit can be controlled separately using its remote control.

In a three-zone home, this can, for example, make it possible to:

  • maintain a slightly different temperature in a bedroom;
  • reduce operation in a rarely used zone;
  • temporarily increase demand in an occupied room;
  • adjust comfort according to the occupants’ habits.

However, it is important to understand that the three units share the same outdoor system. They therefore do not operate like three completely independent heat pumps.

Fujitsu specifies that the system can provide heating or cooling, but not both simultaneously.

This feature is normal for this type of multi-zone system and is very well suited to the seasonal needs of a Quebec residence.

A location near the staircase: why this choice can be very effective

The photo shows a unit installed on a wall in the immediate vicinity of a staircase.

This type of location can be particularly useful when the goal is to influence a circulation area between different levels.

Warm air and cool air do not move in the same way, and a staircase can become an important natural air circulation pathway in a home.

This does not mean that a unit installed near a staircase will automatically replace units in the other rooms. In this project, it is specifically a three-zone system: the other areas have their own conditioning.

The advantage of this approach is that each unit can be installed where it is most useful, rather than asking a single heat pump to serve the entire property.

High-wall installation, with no obstruction in front of the air discharge

The Fujitsu unit visible in the photo is installed very close to the ceiling while maintaining the space required for its operation.

This type of positioning offers several advantages.

First, it frees up the lower wall area and avoids any interaction with furniture or walkways.

Next, the discharged air can travel a greater distance before being blocked by an obstacle.

Finally, elevated positioning is particularly logical for a wall-mounted heat pump, since the unit needs unobstructed access to draw in room air and redistribute it throughout the space.

However, installation quality depends on complying with the clearances specified by the manufacturer. A unit placed too close to the ceiling can hinder air intake, complicate maintenance, and reduce accessibility.

That is why we always verify the actual available space before permanently installing the unit.

The technical details that matter in a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone installation

A multizone system is not sized by simply adding the BTUs

The question of BTUs comes up constantly in multizone heat pump projects.

A homeowner could easily believe that simply adding the rated capacity of the three indoor units is enough to determine the system’s capacity.

This calculation is incomplete.

Fujitsu combination tables show several configurations in which the combined capacity of the indoor units exceeds the condenser’s rated capacity.

The manufacturer indicates a connection capacity of up to 130 % for certain multizone systems.

This allows great flexibility in selecting indoor units, but Fujitsu also specifies that exceeding 100% does not increase the system’s production capacity.

This distinction is essential.

A configuration with three indoor units may be fully permitted even though the condenser is not capable of simultaneously supplying the maximum combined capacity of all three rated units.

What this means in a real home

The rooms’ heating needs are constantly changing.

One bedroom may quickly reach its setpoint and reduce its demand while another zone continues to require more heating.

The variable-speed system then adjusts its operation according to the overall demand.

That is why sizing must be based on the reality of the building: floor area, insulation, windows, solar exposure, number of exterior walls, ceiling height, and room use.

Combination tables are used to verify equipment compatibility, but Fujitsu specifies that they are not intended to select system capacity and recommends using its Design Simulator software for AIRSTAGE H Series equipment.

Indoor units in different formats can be combined

The flexibility of the Aquila range is not limited to the number of zones.

Fujitsu documentation indicates that the outdoor units in this family can be combined with different indoor unit formats:

  • wall-mounted units;
  • Slim Duct;
  • compact cassettes;
  • Mid Static Duct.

This variety makes it possible to adapt the design to the building’s actual architecture.

In the Saint-Louis project, the visible unit is a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE wall-mounted unit, a particularly suitable solution in an area where the wall provides a clear installation location.

In other areas of a property, a recessed unit may be preferable if the ceiling or attic allows this type of installation.

The inverter compressor improves system modulation

Fujitsu documentation also mentions the use of an inverter-driven compressor.

This technology allows the system to adjust its speed to demand rather than operating solely in full on-off cycles.

In a three-zone system, this modulation capability is particularly important.

When all three units call for heat, the compressor can increase its speed.

When two zones reach their target temperature, demand decreases and the system can adjust its output.

This operation helps maintain more stable comfort and prevents the system from continuously producing more energy than necessary.

A heat pump designed for serious winter conditions

In Saint-Louis, as elsewhere in Greater Montreal, winter operation is a major consideration.

The Fujitsu documentation provided for Aquila and Aquila CTEB H Series systems presents the cold-climate versions as capable of heating operation down to -26 °C.

This feature is particularly relevant for homeowners looking for a cold-climate heat pump and wishing to use their system for purposes other than summer cooling.

However, an important distinction must be made between the minimum operating temperature and the capacity available at that temperature.

A heat pump can continue operating at very low temperatures while its actual capacity varies.

This is why we consider the overall performance profile and the building's needs before recommending a configuration.

Why a single outdoor unit is often an advantage

A three-zone configuration uses multiple indoor units but only one compatible outdoor unit.

This configuration offers several practical advantages.

It notably reduces:

  • the number of visible condensers around the house;
  • the number of outdoor supports or bases;
  • the mechanical space occupied;
  • the proliferation of equipment on the façades.

For homes with a small yard or an already well-landscaped outdoor space, this advantage can be decisive.

The trade-off is that the refrigeration design must be particularly rigorous since the three circuits converge on the same system.

Line routing must be planned before securing the units

In an installation like the one in Saint-Louis, the visible wall is relatively uncluttered.

This means that technical runs quickly become visible if they are not installed properly.

Before securing a unit, we must therefore know the routing of:

  • refrigerant lines;
  • communication cables;
  • electrical wires, depending on the configuration;
  • condensate drains;
  • possible line covers.

Drainage deserves special attention.

A wall-mounted unit produces condensate when operating in cooling mode. This water must be drained reliably.

An improper slope or an obstruction can cause backflow and eventually a leak inside.

Future maintenance also influences the choice of location

A wall-mounted heat pump must remain accessible.

In the project photo, the unit is installed high up, but it is not wedged into a niche or behind a structure.

This accessibility makes filter cleaning and future service easier.

On a three-zone installation, maintenance is especially important because three indoor units operate year-round.

Loaded filters can reduce airflow and increase the strain on the system.

We therefore recommend regularly monitoring the filters and carrying out more thorough HVAC maintenance when the inside of the units begins to accumulate dust on the evaporator, blower wheel, or drain pan.

Errors we avoid on a three-zone installation

A multi-zone heat pump offers a great deal of flexibility, but it is less forgiving of design errors.

Among the mistakes we seek to avoid are:

  • selecting units solely according to floor area;
  • oversizing each zone as a precaution;
  • ignoring the condenser’s actual capacity when multiple zones are operating;
  • choosing the location based on ease of drilling;
  • installing the unit too close to a ceiling;
  • creating a drainage route without a sufficient slope;
  • neglecting access for maintenance;
  • assuming that the three units can operate simultaneously in opposite modes.

A successful HVAC installation therefore begins well before the first hole is drilled in the wall.

Why the Saint-Louis photo aptly summarizes our approach

The visible installation seems simple: a white unit, a white wall, a staircase.

But this visual simplicity is precisely the desired result.

The unit is installed high up, in an uncluttered area, with unobstructed airflow and without interfering with traffic on the staircase.

No complex decorative elements were needed to conceal the installation. The positioning itself allows the system to remain discreet.

This is often what distinguishes a thoughtfully planned installation from one carried out solely according to the shortest route for the piping.
