Is replacing an existing system eligible?

What you need to know about LogisVert program eligibility when replacing an existing heat pump

As part of Hydro-Québec's LogisVert – Efficient Homes program, many homeowners are wondering if replacing an existing heat pump qualifies them for financial assistance. The answer isn't as simple as a "yes" or a "no"—it all depends on the type of measure requested , the program's eligibility conditions , and, most importantly, the condition of the replaced equipment . At AirGreen , we've helped many clients in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore through the process, and here we share the essentials you need to know.

The basics of the LogisVert program

The LogisVert program aims to encourage the adoption of energy efficiency measures by offering subsidies for specific appliances and work, such as the installation of efficient heat pumps , high-efficiency heat pumps with caulking , or solar heating systems for swimming pools .

Among the key measures, we find:

  • Efficient mini-split wall-mounted heat pumps or air-to-air central units

  • High-efficiency heat pumps with caulking work

  • Heat pump dryers

  • Induction cookers

  • Roof insulation with caulking

But when it comes to replacing an already installed heat pump , things get complicated.

Is replacing an existing system eligible?

According to the official LogisVert guide (version 1.3 – January 2025) , certain restrictions are clearly established regarding equipment replacements:

❌ Ineligible cases:

  1. Replacing a heat pump following a breakdown or malfunction, even if the unit is no longer under warranty, is not eligible.

  2. Partial replacement , such as a single evaporator, condenser, or coil, is not eligible.

  3. Installations made outside of habitable spaces , such as attics or uninsulated roofs, are not recognized.

✅ Potentially eligible cases:

  1. The voluntary replacement of an old, functional appliance (for example, an old, inefficient wall-mounted air conditioner) with a high-efficiency wall-mounted heat pump , appearing on the list approved by Hydro-Québec , is eligible if all other program conditions are met.

  2. Integrating a new high-efficiency heat pump as part of a comprehensive renovation project , combined with caulking work, can open the door to an enhanced grant .

Concrete examples experienced by AirGreen

📍 Example in Laval – eligible strategic replacement

A client in Laval had an old wall-mounted air conditioning system dating from 2010, which was non-reversible and energy-intensive. We installed a Gree Extreme 18,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump , approved on the LogisVert list. The replacement was deemed eligible because:

  • The old unit was not a heat pump,

  • The new system met the technical requirements (BTU, SEER, HSPF, AHRI),

  • The installation was carried out by an RBQ certified contractor.

Result: A grant of $1,704 was approved .

📍 Example in Longueuil – case refused

A customer attempted to replace a 2018 Fujitsu wall-mounted heat pump with a newer version. However, her original unit was still functional and new. Additionally, no weatherstripping was added. The request was denied as a simple replacement, which was not eligible.

What can you do to maximize your chances of eligibility?

1. Check whether your project falls within one of the eligible measures of the LogisVert program :

  • If your current system is not a heat pump , or if it is an older wall-mounted air conditioner, a complete replacement with a high-efficiency heat pump may be eligible.

2. Choose a heat pump from the official list of eligible devices :

Hydro-Québec publishes an up-to-date list of eligible models. At AirGreen, we help you choose recognized brands and models, such as:

  • FUJITSU KZAH R-32

  • Sharp ZU1

  • Gree Extreme and Sapphire

  • Bosch BOVA and BIVA IDS Premium R-454B

  • Goodman R-32

3. Work with a certified installer :

The chosen company must be registered with the Registraire des entreprises du Québec , have a valid RBQ license and, ideally, be a member of a professional association in the HVAC sector. This is obviously the case for all installations carried out by AirGreen .

4. Provide complete documents:

  • Detailed invoices (purchase + installation),

  • Photos of the nameplates,

  • Certificate of ownership (tax bill, bill of sale).

Integrated into multiple measures? Consider subsidized financing

The LogisVert program offers a 5% bonus on the total grant if you combine at least two eligible measures in a single application. For example:

✔️ Heat pump + caulking
✔️ Heat pump + heat pump dryer
✔️ Heat pump + induction cooker

Bottom line: Replacing an existing HVAC system may be eligible, but only in certain specific cases

At AirGreen , we recommend that each client validate the eligibility of their project BEFORE starting work . Thanks to our personalized support, we have enabled hundreds of homeowners in Montreal and throughout the region to fully benefit from LogisVert subsidies .
