Armacell Armaflex insulation: a refrigerant line kept dry, from the first joint to the last

A closed-cell elastomeric foam made since 1954, by Armstrong and then by Armacell. On a heat pump line, five products do the job: the 6 ft tube, the joint-free roll, the sheet, the tape and the 520 adhesive. The technical figures on this page come from Armacell’s own data sheets, with their date.

Three questions, and the piece that goes on your line

Tell us the pipe size, what you are insulating and where: the tool returns the product, the walls offered, each variant’s code and what Armacell says about it.

Copper tube size (that is the insulation size)
What you are insulating
Where

The insulation size is the size of the copper tube it covers. On a wall-mounted heat pump the suction line is often 3/8, 1/2 or 5/8 in and the liquid line 1/4 or 3/8 in: check the unit’s manual.

Result

The five Armacell products in the shop

Why Armacell insists on closed cells. On its page on insulating refrigeration equipment, Armacell sums up the stake: prevent condensation by keeping the insulation surface above the dew point. Its vapour barrier, it writes, “is not concentrated on a thin foil but built up throughout the insulation thickness”. A cut or an open joint therefore lets moisture reach the cold copper.

Eight Armacell rules that are not up for debate

Taken from the North American application manual (2015), the European manual (2022) and the know-how sheet on bends (2020). The words in quotation marks are Armacell’s.

1

Push, never pull

“Always push the Armaflex tube over the pipe”: pulling the insulation along the pipe can tear it.

North American manual 2015, p. 17; know-how sheet 2020
2

Never stretched

Glued surfaces are pressed together, never pulled. A stretched tube thins out and its joints end up opening.

European manual 2022, p. 9; North American manual, p. 22
3

Every joint glued with 520

“Seal all joints with Armaflex 520 adhesive”: butt joints, slits and ends. Tacky in 1 to 5 minutes, full strength in 36 hours.

North American manual, p. 22; 520 sheet (2018)
4

No glue below 4 °C

The 520 sheet sets application at 40 °F (4 °C) minimum; the European manual aims for 15 to 20 °C and forbids the adhesive below 0 °C.

520 sheet (2018); European manual 2022, p. 8
5

Elbows are cut, not bent

With a 1/2 in wall or thicker, the insulation is not slid around a bend: a mitred fitting cover is required. Bent, the insulation no longer reaches the intended thickness.

North American manual, p. 17
6

Outdoors, the insulation gets protected

“Painting with WB Finish or other protective jacketing is required”: bare foam does not stay in the sun. The European manual allows three days at most without protection.

Tube sheet 2021; European manual 2022, p. 5
7

The tape finishes, it does not hold

Self-adhesive tape is never the sole fixing of a butt joint or a seam: glue first, tape second.

European manual 2022, p. 5
8

Never on a system in operation

“Never insulate plant and systems that are in operation.” And the adhesive is highly flammable (flash point below 20 °F): away from any flame, in a ventilated space.

European manual 2022, p. 5; 520 sheet

05 · Warranty and programs

What Armacell warrants, what the programs cover, what the Code requires

Checked on Armacell’s documents and on the programs’ own sites, October 26, 2026.

Armacell warranty
  • Armacell publishes no fixed-term warranty on these products for North America: its sheets carry only a disclaimer. So we show no duration.
  • Armacell’s data sheets place the responsibility for a professional, correct installation that meets building regulations with the customer (the buyer).
  • No labour or performance warranty is shown here.
What the Code requires
  • Buildings under Chapter I.1 (NECB 2020, in force since July 13, 2024): article 5.2.5.3 requires heating and cooling piping to be insulated per Table 5.2.5.3, except, among others, pipes within a dwelling unit’s conditioned space. Thickness on quotation.
  • Houses: follow the heat pump installation manual for which lines to insulate and how thick.
  • Flame and smoke: the National Building Code (art. 3.6.5.5) sets the indices of pipe insulation by location and building type; Armaflex’s values are on Armacell’s sheet (below 25 / below 50, CAN/ULC S102 through 1 in).
LogisVertDoes not apply

Hydro-Québec’s guide (v1.10, Sept. 15, 2026) only covers roof insulation and air sealing. The heat pump itself may qualify: see its brand page.

In Canada, insulation products are not eligible for ENERGY STAR certification (NRCan).

RénoclimatDoes not apply

Building envelope insulation only (roof, walls, foundations) under the October 1, 2026 rules.

06 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Armaflex insulation

Which insulation size do I need?

The size of the copper tube to cover: a 3/8 in tube takes 3/8 in insulation. What our product sheets call “pipe size” is the insulation’s inside diameter at Armacell.

Which wall thickness should I choose?

We offer three tube walls (3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 in). Armacell publishes no table by climate or humidity: it points to its ArmaWin software. The wall is chosen on site, from the heat pump manual and the location. On quotation.

Do both lines need insulation?

Follow the heat pump installation manual. The suction line, the larger one, is cold in cooling: it is the one that sweats. On a heat pump the liquid line changes temperature with the mode, and many manuals ask for it to be insulated too.

6 ft tube or roll?

The roll covers a long line in one piece, with no butt joint, but in our shop only in 3/8 in wall and up to 7/8 in pipe. The tube comes in three walls and up to 3-1/8 in, and every joint is glued with 520. The tool in section 02 counts your joints.

Can Armaflex be installed in winter?

The insulation, yes; the glue has a limit. The 520 sheet sets application at 40 °F (4 °C) minimum, and Armacell’s European manual aims for 15 to 20 °C, never below 0 °C.

Does Armaflex withstand the sun?

Not bare. Armacell writes that outdoors, WB Finish paint or protective jacketing is required to prevent damage to the insulation; its European manual allows three days at most without protection. Neither the paint nor the jacketing is in the shop: write to us.

Is the tape enough to close a joint?

No. Armacell’s European manual rules out self-adhesive tape as the sole fixing of a butt joint or seam. Glue first with 520; the tape finishes exposed joints and small fittings.

Does it burn?

Armacell’s sheets give flame spread and smoke developed indices below 25 and below 50 (ASTM E84, UL 723), with CAN/ULC S102 through 1 in wall, and UL 94 5VA and V-0 from 1/4 in. The Code sets the required indices by location. The 520 adhesive, for its part, is highly flammable.

What about mould?

According to Armacell, AP ArmaFlex passed UL 181 (mould) and ASTM G21 and C1338 (fungi), and is made with MICROBAN antimicrobial protection.

Is there a grant for the insulation?

None among the programs checked on October 26, 2026: LogisVert only covers roof insulation, ENERGY STAR certifies no insulation in Canada, Rénoclimat covers the envelope, Chauffez vert has ended and the federal program is closed. The heat pump itself may qualify for LogisVert.

What is the warranty?

Armacell publishes no fixed-term warranty for North America on these products; its sheets carry only a disclaimer. So we show no duration.

Do you sell WB Finish paint or outdoor jacketing?

Not in the shop. The five Armacell products online are the tube, the roll, the sheet, the tape and the adhesive. For outdoor protection, write to us.

How do I order?

All five products are priced on quotation. Write to us or call with the pipe size, the wall and the quantity; the tool in section 01 gives you each variant’s code.
