Quick facts
The MERV 13 filter box fits into a 6 in round duct, most often on the fresh air intake of an air exchanger. Outdoor air passes through a MERV 13 filter before entering the unit, then the house.
An air exchanger brings in outdoor air, along with what it carries
An HRV or ERV renews the air in the house continuously. That is its purpose, but outdoor air carries pollen, construction dust, traffic particles and, some summers, wildfire smoke. The exchanger’s original filter mainly protects the unit; a MERV 13 filter box adds finer filtration on the air you breathe.
What MERV 13 means
MERV is the filter efficiency scale defined by the ASHRAE 52.2 standard. The higher the value, the more fine particles the filter captures. MERV 13 sits near the top of the scale for residential use.
Installing it properly
- On the fresh air duct, between the outdoor hood and the exchanger.
- In an open spot, so the filter is easy to replace.
- With a check of the exchanger’s balancing after installation, since the filter adds resistance.
Replace the filter regularly: when clogged, it reduces the fresh air intake.
Installed by AirGreen across Greater Montréal
Our technicians install the filter box and rebalance the air exchanger in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the South Shore and the North Shore. RBQ licence 5645-9605-01. For availability or a quote, call us at 514 316-2973 or email sales@airgreen.ca with your air exchanger model.
Filtering outdoor air before it enters the home
The air exchanger brings in fresh air all the time; the filter box cleans it on the way through.
- Fresh-air intake duct of an air exchanger (HRV or ERV)
- Homes near a highway, a construction site or an industrial area
- Occupants sensitive to pollen or fine particles
- Wildfire smoke episodes

What to know before installing
- Check the fresh-air duct size: this box has 6 in connections.
- Leave clear access to replace the filter.
- A finer filter adds resistance: the air exchanger’s balance should be checked after installation.
- Replace the filter regularly; a clogged filter cuts fresh-air intake.

Frequently asked questions
What does MERV 13 mean?
MERV is the filter efficiency scale of the ASHRAE 52.2 standard. The higher the value, the more fine particles the filter catches; MERV 13 is near the top of the scale for residential filters.
Where does it go?
On the fresh-air intake duct, between the outdoor hood and the air exchanger, somewhere easy to reach for filter changes.
Does the air exchanger need rebalancing?
It is a good idea. The filter adds resistance to airflow; we check the airflows after installation.
Can you install it?
Yes. Our technicians install it on the fresh-air duct and rebalance the air exchanger, everywhere in Greater Montréal.
