Air Filtration

The stock filter in a furnace or air exchanger mainly protects the equipment. The two Fantech products in this collection filter the air you breathe more finely, right in the ducts, with no portable unit in every room.

Two levels of filtration

  • MERV 13 filter box – 6 in: fits a 6 in round duct, most often on the fresh-air intake of an air exchanger; MERV is the scale defined by the ASHRAE 52.2 standard.
  • 240 CFM HEPA filtration system: draws air from the ductwork, passes it through a HEPA filter and returns it to the rooms.
  • HEPA filter: by definition, it captures at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 micron, the hardest size to catch.

Start from the system you have

With an HRV or ERV, the MERV 13 box goes on the fresh-air duct, between the exterior hood and the exchanger; since the filter adds resistance, the exchanger’s balance is checked after installation. The HEPA system needs existing ductwork: a furnace, an air handler or a central heat pump. In both cases, leave clear access, because a clogged filter cuts airflow.
