Refrigerant Piping

This collection holds the copper that connects a heat pump’s indoor unit to its outdoor unit: soft A.C.R. tubing you insulate on site, line sets that come already insulated, and pre-insulated tube sold one line at a time, for wall-mounted, multi-zone and central heat pumps.

Three ways to run a line

  • Soft A.C.R. copper tubing: 50 ft coil in ten outside diameters from 1/8 in to 1-1/8 in, bent on site.
  • Pre-insulated line set: liquid and gas lines already insulated, 50 ft coil, in 1/4 × 3/8, 1/4 × 1/2, 1/4 × 5/8 and 3/8 × 3/4 in, connected with flare fittings.
  • Pre-insulated copper tube: a single tube under 1/2 in insulation, from 1/4 in to 7/8 in, in 50 ft coils or, up to 1/2 in, 164 ft coils.

Choosing the right diameter

A.C.R. tubing is named by its actual outside diameter: a 5/8 in tube fits a 5/8 in fitting and matches a 5/8 in port on the unit. The sizes to use are in the unit’s installation manual; on a line set, the first number is the liquid line. If your pair of sizes is not offered as a set, for example a 7/8 in suction line, take two coils of pre-insulated tube. On that tube, the 1/2 in in the title is the insulation thickness, not the copper size.
