Brazing Supplies

A leak-tight brazed joint is prepared before the torch is lit. This collection brings together the filler metal for copper joints, the abrasive that brings the tube back to bright metal, and the flux that brass and dissimilar metals require.

What a brazed joint needs

  • Silver brazing rods: 5% or 15% silver in 3/32 in or 1/8 in (1 lb pack), 45% silver in 1/16 in (1 oz pack).
  • Abrasive cloth for copper: 1-1/2 in strip on a cloth backing, 10 or 25 yd roll.
  • Brazing flux: 7 oz size, it shields the surfaces from oxidation during heating and helps the alloy flow into the joint.

Silver content and flux

The 5% and 15% rods handle most copper-to-copper work on heat pumps and air conditioners. The 45% rod is mainly for joints that include brass or another metal, and it is then used with flux. The 1/8 in rod puts down more metal on large diameters. The label on the pack states whether flux is required: the label is what counts. Clean only the part of the tube that goes into the fitting, opening facing down so particles do not fall into the line, then apply a thin coat of flux to the male part.
