Quick facts
A 4.5 kW electric backup with 48 US gal of stored water for your renewable-energy system
What the AltSource 50-4.5 is and who it suits
Thermo 2000’s AltSource is not an ordinary electric boiler. Its tank holds 48 US gal of water, and the manufacturer presents it as the only high water volume electric boiler on the market. It serves as the backup source of a renewable-energy heating system: an air-to-water heat pump, a geothermal system or solar collectors do most of the work, and the AltSource adds electric heat as needed.
The 4.5 kW size is the smallest in the series. It runs on a single heating element, in a single stage, and produces 15,354 BTU/h at 240 V according to Thermo 2000. It suits homes where the main source already covers most of the needs: a bungalow with radiant floor heating, a small well-insulated house, an addition tied into an existing hot-water loop.
A modest current draw for your electrical panel
In many homes in Montreal and Laval, the electrical panel is already busy: range, water heater, dryer, charging station. The AltSource 50-4.5 needs only a 30 A breaker and 10-gauge copper wire, according to the manufacturer’s data. If the building has a 208 V supply, output drops to 3.4 kW (16.3 A); we take this into account from the estimate onward.
The T2 UltraSmart controller is included. With the supplied outdoor sensor, it adjusts output and water temperature to the weather, shuts heating off in warm weather and offers a Boost mode. Two operating modes are available: standalone electric, the default setting, or automatic transfer controlled by an external contact.
The unit is 56 7/16 in high and 22 in in diameter, and 25 1/2 in deep with the door. It weighs 280 lb, plus the water in the tank once filled: we choose a location with you in the basement or mechanical room, on a floor that can carry that weight.
What AirGreen’s installation covers
Everything starts with a free on-site estimate. We look at the main source, the hot-water loop (radiant floor, baseboards or radiators), the electrical panel and the available space. You then receive a written quote. It lists the circulator and expansion tank to plan for, since they are not among the parts Thermo 2000 supplies. The manufacturer recommends a #30 tank for a radiant floor or baseboards, and a #60 for cast-iron radiators.
On installation day, our technicians set the unit in place and connect it to the loop through its 1 in NPT fittings. They install the supplied 30 psi relief valve, automatic air vent and outdoor sensor, then make the electrical connection. We fill and purge the system, set the controller and check operation with you.
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. For its part, Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 15 years in residential use and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.
Plan your electric backup
We install the AltSource in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore. Ask for your free estimate: you receive a clear written quote, and financing is available so you can go ahead without waiting.
A small electric backup for a renewable source
The AltSource 50-4.5 holds 48 US gal of water in its tank and adds 4.5 kW of electric heat as a backup to the main source. Thermo 2000 designs it to support an air-to-water heat pump, a geothermal system or solar collectors.
- Backup for an air-to-water heat pump that heats a radiant floor
- Electric backup for a solar thermal system
- Bungalow or small house with a modest heating demand
- Electrical panel with little room for a large breaker

What to know before installing
- Dedicated 240 V single-phase circuit: Thermo 2000 lists a 30 A breaker and Cu 10 / Al 10 wire gauge.
- At 208 V, output drops to 3.4 kW (16.3 A), according to the manufacturer.
- The circulator and expansion tank are not on the list of supplied parts. Thermo 2000 recommends a #30 tank for baseboards or a radiant floor, and a #60 for cast-iron radiators.
- Plan room for a unit 56 7/16 in high and 22 in in diameter (25 1/2 in deep with the door). It weighs 280 lb, plus the water in the tank once filled.
- Maximum working pressure of 30 psi (207 kPa): the water loop must be designed accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
Can a 4.5 kW AltSource heat on its own?
Yes, standalone electric mode is the controller’s default setting. With a single 4.5 kW element, though, it mainly suits a main source that does most of the work or a modest heating load. We confirm the size during the free estimate.
What electrical protection is needed?
Thermo 2000 lists a 30 A breaker at 240 V and Cu 10 or Al 10 wire gauge. We check your panel’s capacity before confirming the quote.
How does it differ from the 4.5 kW AltSource 70?
The output is the same. The AltSource 70 holds 71 US gal of water instead of 48 US gal, in a wider and heavier unit. The AltSource 50 suits basements where space is tight.
Can it also heat domestic water?
With the option Thermo 2000 offers: a 26.2 sq ft parallel copper coil heat exchanger that heats or preheats domestic water, up to 12 gpm.
What warranty does Thermo 2000 offer?
Thermo 2000 covers the tank and coils for 15 years in residential use (10 years in commercial use) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.
