Quick facts
A 71-gallon hot water reserve to back up your renewable source
An electric boiler designed as a backup
The 24 kW AltSource 70 looks nothing like a small wall-mounted boiler. It is a floor-standing unit that keeps 71 US gallons of water in its tank, a thermal mass Thermo 2000 puts at the heart of the line. Its main job is to back up a renewable-energy heating system: an air-to-water heat pump, a geothermal system or solar collectors. When the main source can no longer keep up, the electric elements take over and the hot water loop holds its temperature.
This 24 kW size, or 81,888 BTU/h at 240 V, suits a home heated with hot water that needs serious backup. It also suits homeowners who move forward in steps: the controller runs in standalone electric mode by default, so the boiler can heat on its own until the renewable source is added.
How it fits a Quebec home
Our winters put air-to-water heat pumps to the test. During a cold snap, a reliable backup source makes the difference between a comfortable home and a radiant floor that struggles to keep up. The AltSource answers that need with four 6 kW elements spread over four stages. With the supplied outdoor sensor, the T2 UltraSmart controller modulates output and water temperature based on the weather outside. A Boost mode and a warm weather shutdown round out the settings.
The boiler serves radiant floors as well as hot water baseboards or radiators. Thermo 2000 recommends a #60 expansion tank for baseboards or radiant floors, and a #90 for cast iron radiators. If you also want to use this reserve for domestic water, the optional copper coil heat exchanger heats or preheats it.
On the electrical side, plan for a 240 V single-phase circuit on a 125 A breaker. The unit draws 100 A at 240 V; connected at 208 V, it delivers 18 kW. At 24 in in diameter and 380 lb, it needs real floor space in the mechanical room.
What AirGreen’s installation covers
It all starts with a free on-site estimate. We look at the heating loop, the existing or planned main source, the floor space and your electrical panel’s capacity. You then receive a written quote that sets out the selected size and every step of the work.
On installation day, our technicians set the boiler in place, make the electrical connection, connect it to the hot water loop, fill and purge the system, then set the controller for your distribution system. Before leaving, we show you how to read the temperature and pressure gauge and what the main settings do.
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work.
Let’s plan your backup system

An electric heat reserve behind your renewable source
The AltSource 70 keeps 71 US gal of hot water in reserve and takes over when the main source can no longer keep up. Thermo 2000 designed it to back up an air-to-water heat pump, a geothermal system or a solar system; it can also heat on its own in standalone electric mode, its default setting.
- Backing up an air-to-water heat pump during extreme cold
- Electric backup for a geothermal system
- Supplementing a solar thermal system
- Radiant floors, hot water baseboards or radiators
- Heating or preheating domestic water with the optional copper coil

What to know before installing
- 240 V single-phase, 60 Hz power supply on a 125 A breaker. The unit draws 100 A at 240 V; Thermo 2000’s suggested wire gauge: copper 2 or aluminum 0.
- At 208 V, output drops to 18 kW and current to 87 A, according to Thermo 2000.
- Floor-standing boiler: 24 in diameter, 28 in deep with the door, 380 lb. Make sure the floor can carry the unit once filled with water.
- Maximum working pressure of 30 psi (207 kPa); the 30 psi relief valve is supplied.
- Thermo 2000 recommends a #60 expansion tank for baseboards or radiant floors and a #90 for cast iron radiators.
- The copper domestic water coil is an option and is not part of the base unit. Required clearances are those in the installation manual.
- 30 psi (207 kPa) relief valve
- Drain valve
- Temperature and pressure gauge
- Automatic air vent
- Heating elements (4 x 6 kW)
- UltraSmart controller
- Outdoor sensor

Frequently asked questions
What is a thermal mass boiler like the AltSource for?
It keeps 71 US gal of heated water in reserve and backs up a main renewable-energy system, such as an air-to-water heat pump or geothermal. When the main source falls short, the electric elements keep the loop at temperature.
Can it heat the house without another source?
Yes. Standalone electric mode is the controller’s default setting. The boiler then heats the loop with its four 6 kW elements.
What electrical service does it need?
A 240 V single-phase circuit protected by a 125 A breaker; Thermo 2000 suggests copper wire gauge 2 or aluminum gauge 0. We check your panel’s capacity during the free estimate.
Can it produce domestic hot water?
With the optional copper coil heat exchanger, yes: Thermo 2000 provides it to heat or preheat domestic water, up to 12 gpm. The option is not part of the base unit.
What warranty does Thermo 2000 offer?
15 years on the tank and coils in residential use (10 years in commercial use) and 2 years on electrical and mechanical components.
