Quick facts
A 7.5 kW electric backup that can also preheat your domestic water
What the AltSource 70-7.5 does
Thermo 2000’s AltSource is a thermal mass electric boiler designed to serve as the backup source of a renewable-energy heating system: air-to-water heat pump, geothermal or solar. The manufacturer describes it as the only high water volume electric boiler on the market. This model combines a 71 US gal tank with 7.5 kW at 240 V, or 25,590 BTU/h, split between a 3 kW and a 4.5 kW element in two stages.
Its T2 UltraSmart controller comes with an outdoor sensor. It modulates output and water temperature to the weather, shuts heating off in warm weather and offers a Boost mode. It runs in standalone electric mode by default or in automatic transfer controlled by an external contact.
An option for domestic water
What sets the AltSource apart from a simple backup is the option Thermo 2000 provides for domestic water: a 26.2 sq ft parallel copper coil heat exchanger. It heats or preheats tap and shower water from the boiler. The manufacturer lists a maximum flow of 12 gpm, a maximum pressure of 125 psi and 3/4 in male sweat domestic water connections (NSF 61).
For a family that uses a lot of hot water, the combination is attractive: a large reserve of heating water, two stages of output and a heat exchanger covered, like the tank, by Thermo 2000’s 15-year warranty in residential use. Electrical and mechanical components are covered for 2 years.
In a Montreal duplex or a family home in Laval
In a Montreal duplex heated by radiators or a family home in Laval with a radiant floor, the AltSource 70-7.5 goes in the mechanical room. It measures 24 in in diameter and 28 in deep with the door, and weighs 380 lb before filling. The heating loop connects in 1 1/4 in NPT and operates at 30 psi maximum; Thermo 2000 recommends a #60 expansion tank with baseboards or a radiant floor, and a #90 with cast-iron radiators.
The electrical circuit calls for a 40 A breaker and Cu 8 / Al 6 wire gauge at 240 V. If the building has a 208 V supply, output becomes 5.6 kW (27.2 A).
What AirGreen’s installation covers
We start with a free on-site estimate, where we look at your main source, the heating loop, your hot-water needs and the electrical panel. The written quote specifies the unit, the domestic water option if you choose it, the circulator, the expansion tank and the electrical work. On the day, our technicians install and connect the boiler, mount the outdoor sensor, fill and purge the system, then set the controller with you.
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01.

What to know before installing
- The domestic water heat exchanger is an option: mention it at the estimate so it is included in the quote.
- 240 V single-phase circuit with a 40 A breaker and Cu 8 / Al 6 wire gauge; at 208 V, output drops to 5.6 kW (27.2 A).
- Unit 24 in in diameter and 28 in deep with the door, weighing 380 lb, plus the water in the tank once filled.
- Expansion tank recommended by Thermo 2000: #60 for baseboards or a radiant floor, #90 for cast-iron radiators. It is not among the supplied parts, nor is the circulator.
- Maximum working pressure of 30 psi (207 kPa) on the heating side.
- 30 psi (207 kPa) relief valve
- Drain valve
- Temperature and pressure gauge
- Automatic air vent
- Heating elements

Frequently asked questions
What is the domestic hot water option for?
It adds a 26.2 sq ft parallel copper coil heat exchanger that heats or preheats domestic water. Thermo 2000 lists a maximum flow of 12 gpm, a maximum pressure of 125 psi and 3/4 in male sweat connections (NSF 61).
Are the coils covered by the warranty?
Yes. Thermo 2000 covers the tank and coils for 15 years in residential use and 10 years in commercial use; electrical and mechanical components and accessories are covered for 2 years.
Why the AltSource 70 rather than the AltSource 50?
At the same output, the AltSource 70 holds 71 US gal of water instead of 48 US gal. It needs more space and a floor that carries a heavier unit; we compare the two with you.
What electrical circuit is needed?
A 40 A breaker and Cu 8 or Al 6 wire gauge, at 240 V single phase, according to Thermo 2000.
Is the outdoor sensor supplied?
Yes, with the T2 UltraSmart controller. It lets the unit modulate output and water temperature on the outdoor temperature.
