When the family grows: 61 US gallons of hot water and a 73-gallon first-hour rating

Teenagers take longer showers, a second bathroom has been added in the basement, and the last person to wash in the morning gets lukewarm water. It is often a sign that the water heater has become too small for the house. The Bradford White RE265T6-1NCWW electric water heater offers a reserve of 61 US gallons (51 imperial gallons, 231 L), two 4,500 W elements and a first-hour rating of 73 gallons (276 L). AirGreen installs it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.

Signs you need a larger tank

A tank that is too small does not break down: it simply runs out of hot water at the wrong times. Showers getting shorter, the dishwasher being put off until the next day, the bath that can no longer be filled after the evening showers are all clues. The RE265T6-1NCWW is aimed at families of four or five, homes with two full bathrooms and households that have added a large tub or a high-flow shower.

On the other hand, a tank that is too large for the house keeps hot water in reserve for nothing and takes up space. That is why we only recommend this size when the family's habits justify it; for a couple, a smaller tank remains the logical choice.

Understanding the first-hour rating

The first-hour rating indicates how much hot water a water heater can supply during one hour of heavy use, starting from a full tank. It combines the reserve with what the elements reheat during that hour. For the RE265T6-1NCWW, Bradford White publishes 73 gallons, or 276 L. To choose the right size, you simply estimate what the household uses during the busiest hour of the day, usually the morning, and choose a unit whose first-hour rating exceeds that need. We do this calculation with you during the assessment, based on your actual habits.

Two 4,500 W elements taking turns

The RE265T6-1NCWW is factory-wired with two 4,500 W elements that work in turn. When hot water is drawn, the upper element first heats the top of the tank to quickly restore hot water to the taps; the lower element then takes over for the rest of the volume. In this configuration, the manufacturer publishes a recovery of 21 US gallons per hour for a 90 °F rise. This combination of a large reserve and sustained recovery is what gives the model its first-hour rating.

The electrical circuit

The factory wiring at 240 V single-phase, with interlocked elements, ensures that only one 4,500 W element heats at a time. In most homes, the circuit of an existing electric tank may be suitable, but we always check the breaker, the conductors and the panel capacity before installation. Simultaneous operation also exists, but it must be specified when ordering and significantly increases the load on the panel; it is rarely justified in a house.

Standby loss and insulation

Bradford White publishes a standby loss of 71 W for this model. This is the heat the large reserve gives off to the room when it is not being used. A larger tank holds more hot water and therefore has a larger surface exchanging heat with the surrounding air; this is normal. To limit losses on the way to the taps, we insulate the accessible hot water piping near the unit.

Manufacturer's warranty

The RE265T6-1NCWW is covered by a 6-year limited warranty on the tank and 6 years on parts. The full terms are provided with the quote.

Installation of the RE265T6-1NCWW by AirGreen

AirGreen is a family-owned heating and cooling company established in Montreal and active for more than fifteen years. Our electrical connections are made under RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 (ventilation, refrigeration and electrical). After a free on-site estimate, you receive a written quote. Installation includes:

  • assessing your peak-hour hot water needs;
  • checking the location, the access path and the drain;
  • draining and removing the old tank;
  • connecting the cold and hot water in 3/4 in. NPT;
  • a new relief valve and its discharge line;
  • the 240 V electrical connection and a check of the breaker;
  • filling, purging air, powering up and setting the temperature;
  • maintenance advice: annual partial flush, relief valve test, anode inspection.

Moving from a small to a large tank

Replacing a tank with a larger model takes a little preparation. The RE265T6-1NCWW weighs 156 lb empty and takes up more space than a mid-size tank; its exact dimensions are confirmed before ordering, and we measure the headroom, the floor space and the stairs during the assessment. The existing 3/4 in. piping usually connects without major modification.

Service area

We install this model in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, as well as in Kirkland, Beaconsfield, Laval-des-Rapides, Saint-Bruno, Beloeil and everywhere on the South Shore and the North Shore. Our financing lets you spread out the payment for your project.
