A 50 US gallon indirect water heater that hands your family’s hot water to your electric boiler

If your home is heated by an electric boiler, the unit that already produces hot water for the floors or radiators can also heat the water for the showers. The Thermo 2000 TurboMax 50-3 indirect water heater makes that link: a 50 US gallon tank fitted with a high-exchange-capacity copper coil system that, according to the manufacturer, heats water instantly. AirGreen installs it in homes in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.

It is a family format: enough reserve for the morning and evening peaks, a reasonable footprint in the basement and an installation that ties into the existing boiler.

Why an indirect tank in a home heated with hot water

A home heated by an electric boiler often also has a separate electric water heater, with its own circuit and its own elements to replace one day. The TurboMax 50-3 groups both functions around a single heating unit. The boiler, already sized for the house, supplies the energy; the indirect tank turns it into domestic hot water, without the heating water and the potable water ever mixing. The day the old water heater reaches the end of its life is often the best time to make this change.

What the 50 US gallon reserve brings

In the manufacturer’s table, first-hour output exceeds continuous output: 703 US GPH versus 653 US GPH for water at 110 °F. This gap comes from the energy already stored in the tank when the demand begins. In practice, this reserve covers the start of the peak: the first morning shower, the children’s bath, a laundry load started at the same time. After that, output depends on what the boiler supplies continuously.

Reading the 110 °F, 140 °F and 160 °F temperatures

Thermo 2000 gives its values for three domestic hot water temperatures. The 110 °F column corresponds to the mixed water of a shower. The 140 °F column corresponds to hotter produced water, brought back to a safe temperature with a thermostatic mixing valve. The 160 °F column concerns particular uses. The hotter the water required, the lower the hourly output: at 140 °F, the TurboMax 50-3 delivers 346 US GPH in the first hour, and 190 US GPH at 160 °F. We set the temperature according to your use, keeping comfort and safety in mind.

The boiler’s capacity sets the real output

The published flows assume that the boiler supplies the exchanger’s maximum exchange capacity, that is 380,000 BTU/h (111 kW) at 110 °F. A residential electric boiler supplies much less. The tank then works the same way, but continuous output follows the boiler’s capacity. The manufacturer adds that these values must be reduced for high-temperature and continuous-flow applications. We therefore do the calculation from your boiler, and we usually program hot water priority so that the boiler devotes itself to the tank for a few minutes before returning to heating.

Installation in the basement

At 60 3/4 in high and 22 in in diameter, the TurboMax 50-3 is installed beside the boiler in most basements. It weighs 212 lb empty; once filled, it must sit on a solid, level floor, near a drain. Potable water connects in 1 1/2 in male sweat and the boiler in 1 1/4 in NPT male. The tank drain valve, supplied as standard, is used during periodic maintenance. The 9 gpm maximum domestic hot water flow guides the choice of distribution piping.
