A 50 US gallon indirect water heater with a large copper exchanger for simultaneous use

Some homes are short not so much on volume as on flow. Two bathrooms used at the same time, a multi-jet shower, a tub filling while the washing machine runs: it is instantaneous flow that makes the difference. The Thermo 2000 TurboMax 50-5 indirect water heater pairs a 50 US gallon tank with a 32.7 sq. ft. copper coil system and a maximum domestic hot water flow of 15 gpm. It is fed by an electric boiler. AirGreen installs it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.

A compact tank, a generous exchanger

The TurboMax 50-5 keeps the footprint of a 50 US gallon tank, at 60 3/4 in high and 22 in in diameter, but it houses an exchange surface of 32.7 sq. ft. Thermo 2000 describes this high-exchange-capacity copper coil system as a way to heat water instantly: domestic water is heated as it passes through the exchanger. The larger the surface, the more heat the exchanger can transfer at once, provided the boiler supplies it.

A 15 gpm flow when several taps open

The maximum domestic hot water flow shows how much hot water can leave the tank at a given moment. With 15 gpm, the TurboMax 50-5 is designed to supply several fixtures at the same time, which makes it a good candidate for a home with several bathrooms or a multi-jet shower. Thermo 2000 specifies that these values must be reduced for high-temperature and continuous-flow applications; we take this into account when sizing the piping and setting the thermostatic mixing valve.

Where the TurboMax 50-5 is the right choice

This model suits a large home heated by an electric boiler, where several people get ready at the same time in the morning. It also suits small businesses heated the same way: a hair salon rinsing continuously, a physiotherapy clinic with a few showers, a yoga studio. In these cases, it is not the reserve that is lacking, but the ability to deliver a lot of hot water at the same time.

For a home where hot water is mostly used one appliance at a time, a smaller exchanger is generally enough. We compare the options with you based on your real habits.

An electric boiler that matches the exchanger

The published exchange capacities, up to 645,000 BTU/h (189 kW) for water at 110 °F, describe what the exchanger can transfer at most. A residential electric boiler supplies much less, and it is the boiler that sets the real continuous output. In a home, the TurboMax 50-5 exchanger therefore rarely works at full capacity; its advantage shows mainly in its 15 gpm maximum flow. In a business equipped with a larger electric boiler, the exchanger can make more of it. In both cases, we check the electrical service and the available capacity before proposing a configuration.

Connections and location

Potable water connects in 1 1/2 in male sweat and the boiler in 1 1/4 in NPT male. The tank weighs 230 lb empty and, once filled, must sit on a solid, level floor, near a drain. Its 22 in diameter lets it take its place beside the boiler in most mechanical rooms. The tank drain valve, supplied as standard, simplifies maintenance. The control is connected to the boiler with hot water priority.

Simple yearly maintenance

One visit per year keeps the system reliable: a test of the relief valve, a check of the circulator and the control, an inspection of the fittings and a partial draining through the tank drain valve when the water carries sediment. In a business where hot water is used all day, we schedule this visit outside opening hours, so service to your customers is never interrupted.

Manufacturer’s warranty

Thermo 2000 offers a 15-year residential warranty, a 10-year commercial warranty and a 2-year warranty on mechanical components. The warranty that applies to your installation is confirmed in writing with the quote.
