BRADFORD WHITE RE2H65T10-1NCTT Heat Pump Water Heater (65 gallons) | Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore & North Shore
A 65 US gallon heat pump water heater that draws its heat from basement air
In many Greater Montreal homes, hot water still comes from a conventional electric tank that heats water with resistance elements alone. The Bradford White RE2H65T10-1NCTT heat pump water heater keeps the familiar shape of an upright tank, but hands most of the work to an integrated heat pump mounted on top of the unit. It holds 65 US gallons (54 imperial gallons, 246 L) and is aimed at homeowners who want to replace an ageing electric tank with a far more efficient unit without changing any of their habits. AirGreen installs it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.
This size suits a single-family house where, for example, a family of three or four lives, with a main bathroom and a powder room. Its reserve gives the heat pump time to work between the morning and evening peaks, and that is exactly what allows a unit of this type to run on its compressor most of the time rather than on its elements.
How the heat pump heats the water
A heat pump water heater applies the principle of an ordinary heat pump to the tank. A fan moves room air across an evaporator, where the refrigerant picks up the heat contained in that air. The compressor then concentrates this heat and transfers it to the water in the tank. The air leaving the unit is therefore cooler and drier than when it went in. Because a good share of the energy comes from the surrounding air rather than from the meter, the unit delivers more heat to the water than it consumes in electricity.
Two backup electric elements, screw-in type, complete the heat pump. They take over when demand exceeds what the compressor can supply, or when you select a mode that calls on them. The factory wiring is interlocked: the two elements never heat at the same time (non-simultaneous, single-phase operation).
Manufacturer data for the RE2H65T10-1NCTT
The following values come from Bradford White's technical documentation for this model.
- Capacity: 65 US gallons, or 54 imperial gallons or 246 L.
- Uniform Energy Factor (UEF): 3.64, based on the AHRI directory.
- Recovery, compressor only: 6 US gal/h (5 imperial gal/h) at a 90 °F rise, or 23 L/h at a 50 °C rise.
- Recovery, compressor and element: 24 US gal/h (20 imperial gal/h), or 91 L/h.
- Test conditions for these figures: standard hybrid mode, ambient air at 19.7 °C (67.5 °F) and 50% relative humidity.
- Backup elements: 4,000 W at 240 V; at 208 V, the upper element is 3,000 W.
- Water connections: 3/4 in. (19 mm) NPT, dielectric fittings installed at the factory.
- Dimensions: height of 63 3/4 in. (1,619 mm), diameter of 25 in. (635 mm).
- Weight: 236 lb (107 kg).
Five modes to follow the season and the demand
The control panel offers five operating modes. Heat pump mode uses the compressor only: it is the most frugal setting, well suited when demand is steady. Standard hybrid mode gives priority to the heat pump and calls on the elements only when needed; it is also the mode in which Bradford White establishes its recovery data. Hybrid plus mode relies more on the elements to rebuild the reserve faster, for example when the house has guests for a few days. Electric mode runs on the elements only, which serves as a backup solution. Finally, vacation mode reduces the unit's activity during an extended absence.
Where to put a heat pump water heater in a Quebec home
Because it draws its heat from the air, this unit needs enough air volume around it. In Quebec, the basement, the mechanical room or a large laundry room are the most common locations. The manufacturer's location requirements, namely the room volume, the clearances around the unit and the drainage of condensate water, are checked during our visit, before the project is confirmed. At 63 3/4 in. tall and 236 lb, the path down the stairs and the space under the joists are also part of the assessment.
The air discharged by the unit is cooler and drier. In summer, it cools and dries the basement, an effect many homeowners in the region appreciate. In winter, if the room is heated, part of the captured heat comes from the home's heating system. We take this into account in our recommendations rather than relying on the published energy factor alone.
Choosing the right capacity
A heat pump heats water more slowly than an electric element: with the compressor alone, recovery is 6 US gallons per hour. That is why tank size matters more than with a conventional water heater. The 65 US gallon reserve of this model covers a typical day for a mid-sized family, after which the heat pump quietly rebuilds it during off-peak hours. If several showers follow one another without a break, or if the house has a large soaker tub, we also compare it with the larger-capacity version of the same line before making a recommendation.
Construction and durability
The tank is protected by Bradford White's Vitraglas with Microban lining and by a protective anode rod, which wears over time in place of the steel. The 3/4 in. NPT water connections receive dielectric fittings at the factory, which limits corrosion between dissimilar metals. The low-restriction brass drain valve makes maintenance flushing easier, and the backup elements can be replaced without touching the tank since they are screw-in.
According to the manufacturer's documentation, the model is ENERGY STAR certified, UL listed, C.E.C. listed and meets NAECA requirements.
Electrical requirements
The unit is factory-wired for a 240 V/208 V single-phase supply, with interlocked elements. At 240 V, each backup element is 4,000 W. The existing tank circuit can often be reused, but we always check it: the breaker and conductor sizes are confirmed during the assessment, based on the unit's nameplate and the Code. Electrical connections are made under our RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, which covers ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work.
Manufacturer's warranty
This model carries the "10" suffix: Bradford White covers it with a 10-year limited warranty on the tank and 10 years on parts. The full warranty terms are provided with your quote.
Installation of the Bradford White RE2H65T10-1NCTT by AirGreen in Greater Montreal
AirGreen is a family-owned heating and cooling company established in Montreal and active for more than fifteen years. Every project begins with a free on-site estimate, followed by a written quote. For this heat pump water heater, our work includes:
- assessing the location: air volume, clearances, headroom, access and a drain for condensate;
- checking the electrical circuit and upgrading it if needed;
- draining, disconnecting and removing the old tank;
- connecting the cold and hot water lines in 3/4 in., with the relief valve and its discharge line;
- the electrical connection and the condensate drain line;
- commissioning, selecting the mode and setting the temperature;

Maintenance that keeps the heat pump efficient
A heat pump water heater needs little maintenance, but a few steps matter. The air intake and the evaporator must stay clear and clean so the heat pump gets enough air. A partial flush through the brass drain valve removes sediment, and periodic inspection of the anode protects the tank. We recommend one maintenance visit per year, especially in areas where the water is harder.
