Quick facts
The 45° flat oval elbow turns an oval duct by 45° while keeping it in the same plane. It is used to run a diagonal path through a ceiling or a floor, or to soften a turn by making it in two steps. It is available in 5 and 6 in.
A shorter run, better airflow
Every turn and every metre of duct adds resistance. When an outlet sits diagonally from the starting point, a diagonal run shortens the path and avoids a series of right-angle turns. The 45° flat elbow also lets you get around a recessed light, an electrical box or a brace without dropping the ceiling.
Two common uses
- Simple offset: one elbow to angle off, a second to come back in line further along.
- Gradual turn: two 45° elbows separated by a short piece of duct replace a 90° elbow.
Installation
Lay out the route taking joists and obstacles into account, then cut the duct sections to the right length. Screw each joint and seal it with aluminum tape or mastic. Support the duct so the joints do not carry its weight. If the duct runs through an unheated space, insulate it.

Taking a diagonal shortcut

Frequently asked questions
When should I pick 45° over 90°?
When a gentle turn is enough, or to get around an obstacle on an angle. Two 45° elbows with a short piece of duct between them also make a more gradual 90° turn.
Flat or vertical 45° elbow?
The flat elbow angles the duct within its plane, with no change in height. The vertical elbow makes it rise or drop.
Which sizes are available?
