The gust-resistant wall hood with gasketed damper terminates a ventilation duct on the exterior wall. Its damper closes against a seal, and its gust-resistant design is meant to keep it from flapping in the wind. It is offered in an Exhaust version for venting and an Intake version for fresh air, in four finishes.

Less cold and fewer drafts through the ducts

A hood whose damper stays partly open or bangs in the wind lets cold air into the duct, all the way to the bathroom or the air exchanger. With a gasketed damper, the outlet stays closed when the unit is off, which matters in the depths of a Québec winter.

Choosing your hood in three steps

  • Size: 4, 5 or 6 in to match the round duct diameter, or 3-1/4 × 10 in for a rectangular duct.
  • Function: Exhaust for venting (bathroom, stale air), Intake for an air exchanger’s fresh air.
  • Finish: galvanized, white, brown or black, to suit the siding. Not every combination is offered: see the list under the sizes.

Good installation practices

For an air exchanger, keep the distance between the intake and the exhaust required by the manufacturer and the code, and place the intake away from sources of contaminants. Slope the exhaust duct toward the outside, insulate it if it passes through a cold space and seal around the hood to the siding with an exterior sealant. Check that the damper moves freely and keep it clear of snow.

01 · What it is for

Your ducts’ door to the outdoors

Every duct that goes through the wall ends at a hood: a damper that closes well and does not flap in the wind keeps cold and drafts outside.

  • Fresh-air intake and stale-air exhaust of an air exchanger (HRV)
  • Exhaust from a bathroom fan or an in-line fan
  • Outlet for a 3-1/4 × 10 in rectangular duct, as found on many range hoods
  • Replacing an old hood whose damper no longer closes
Gasketed damperThe damper closes on a seal, limiting the air that gets through while the equipment is off.
Anti-gust designDesigned so wind gusts don’t make the damper flap.
Intake or exhaustTwo versions by air direction, in four finishes.

04 · Before installing

What to know before installing

  • Pick the size from the duct: 4, 5 or 6 in round, or 3-1/4 × 10 in rectangular.
  • Order the function that matches the air direction: Exhaust for venting out, Intake for fresh air.
  • For an air exchanger, keep the intake-to-exhaust distance required by the unit maker and the code.
  • Seal the hood to the siding with exterior sealant and keep the damper clear of snow and debris.

06 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

Intake or exhaust: which one?

The one that matches the air direction in the duct. Exhaust for venting out (bathroom, stale air from an air exchanger), Intake for the fresh air entering the exchanger.

What does “gasketed damper” mean?

The damper closes on a seal. While the equipment is off, less cold air gets in through the duct.

Do I also need a backdraft damper?

The hood’s damper is enough in many cases. On a very wind-exposed wall, an in-line backdraft damper adds a second barrier.

Can you install it?

Yes. We core the wall, install the hood and seal it on our air exchanger and fan installations across Greater Montréal.
