Quick facts
The red flashing in a 10 ft roll is used to seal the opening drilled through the exterior wall for a heat pump's refrigerant lines, condensate drain and cable. It helps keep rainwater and cold air out of the wall.
The wall penetration, a point not to overlook
Every wall-mounted heat pump needs a hole a few inches wide in the exterior wall. Poorly sealed, this penetration lets in the water that runs down the façade. It seeps behind the siding, wets the insulation and the structure, and the damage often shows up only years later. Flashing carefully installed around the opening prevents that scenario.
Good sealing practices
- Drill the penetration with a slight slope to the outside.
- Install the flashing overlapping, like shingles: the upper piece covers the lower one, so water runs away from the wall.
- Finish around the lines with a sealant suited for exterior use.
- Follow the instructions printed on the roll or its packaging.
One roll for several installations
The 10 ft roll usually covers several wall-mounted heat pump penetrations, depending on the size of the opening and the type of wall. It is also used to reseal an old penetration when a unit is replaced.

Frequently asked questions
What is flashing for on a heat pump installation?
To seal the opening drilled through the exterior wall for the refrigerant lines, the drain and the cable, so rainwater does not get into the wall.
How many penetrations does a roll cover?
It depends on the size of the opening and the wall. A 10 ft roll usually covers several wall-mount heat pump penetrations.
Is flashing enough on its own?
No. It goes with a penetration drilled with a slight slope toward the outside and a sealant around the lines.
Can you install it?
Yes. Our technicians seal the wall penetration on every heat pump installation, everywhere in Greater Montréal.
