A two-stage central heat pump for the comfort of an entire large home

In a large home that already has ductwork, a central heat pump handles the cooling of every room and most of the heating, with a single cabinet and a single thermostat. The Central Heat Pump ARCOAIRE H4H7T ION 2 stages | 3 Tons - 36,000 BTU (Air Handler FJMA4X) - R410A pairs the H4H7T36AKAAA outdoor unit with the FJMA4X36L0BB cabinet, which pushes air through the existing duct system.

Its compressor is two-stage. In a large home, where the demand for heat or cooling changes a great deal from hour to hour and from season to season, that is what sets it apart from a conventional single-speed system.

A large home, a demand that keeps changing

The 3-ton size is aimed at large homes: a spacious two-storey house with a finished basement, a detached house with many rooms, a large enlarged single-storey house. In these homes, demand varies enormously. A cool October morning, a sunny afternoon behind large windows, a January night and a humid July evening have nothing in common.

The size is confirmed with a room-by-room load calculation that takes into account the insulation, windows, orientation and airtightness of each level. A large, recent, well-insulated home may do with less; we say so during the visit rather than forcing this size.

The H4H7T ION pairing and the FJMA4X cabinet

The H4H7T36AKAAA outdoor unit holds the two-stage compressor, the outdoor coil and its fan. The FJMA4X36L0BB cabinet is an air handler: it houses the indoor coil, the blower that pushes air through the ducts and the space for the backup electric heating elements. It takes the place of the old electric furnace and connects to the existing plenum and return air.

The two units are linked by an insulated copper refrigerant line and run on R-410A. The thermostat must be compatible with a two-stage heat pump and with the backup; we supply it, connect it and set it up.

Two stages: a reduced level and full capacity

A single-speed compressor runs at full capacity or stops. A two-stage compressor can also run at a reduced level when demand is moderate, and switch to full capacity when demand rises.

In a large home, full capacity is only needed on the hottest summer days and during the cold spells of winter. The rest of the time, a system with a reduced level can run longer without overshooting the set point, with fewer stops and restarts, and air moves more continuously to the rooms farthest from the cabinet.

System ratings

The pairing of the H4H7T36AKAAA outdoor unit and the FJMA4X36L0BB indoor unit is not listed with SEER2 ratings in the AHRI certification directory. We confirm the ratings of the complete system before the quote; they also determine grant eligibility.

You will therefore know the ratings of the proposed system before signing. As a reminder, SEER2 measures cooling efficiency over a season, EER2 cooling efficiency in hot weather and HSPF2 heating efficiency over a season; the higher they are, the less the system uses for the same comfort. If you are comparing several options, we place them side by side on the same basis, with the exact model numbers.

The duct system of a large home

A 3-ton heat pump moves a large volume of air, and the duct system must be able to let it through. A central heat pump only delivers its full efficiency if the airflow keeps up. During the visit, we look at:

  • the main trunk, which must be sized for the heat pump and not only for the old furnace;
  • the long branches leading to the far rooms, their sealing and their insulation in unheated spaces;
  • the returns, ideally on each level;
  • the balancing dampers, which set each level's share according to the season.

Winter, the heat pump and the backup

A heat pump moves heat instead of producing it. In winter, the refrigerant captures heat from the outdoor air, the compressor concentrates it, and the cabinet's coil releases it to the air that the blower distributes. The air coming out of the grilles is warm rather than very hot, and the house temperature stays steadier than with an electric furnace.

As the cold intensifies, the heat pump supplies less heat while the house asks for more. In deep cold, the cabinet's backup elements take over the missing share, then switch off when the heat pump is enough again. During defrost, they may also come on briefly; the white vapour rising from the outdoor unit at that moment is normal.

The electrical panel

In a large home, the cabinet's backup is the largest electrical load in the system. Its capacity must cover the coldest nights, but it must also fit within what the electrical service and panel can deliver, on top of the water heater, the range, the dryer and, where applicable, a spa or a charging station.

We take stock during the visit, along with the outdoor unit's dedicated circuit and the cabinet's supply. We hold the RBQ licence for electrical work; if a change is needed, it appears in the written quote, before signing.

Summer: the humidity of a large volume

In summer, the cabinet cools the air and removes humidity, which flows out through the condensate drain. On warm, humid days, the compressor's reduced level lets the system run longer without cooling the house too quickly, which gives the coil time to dry the air. Upstairs, where heat builds up under the roof, the balancing dampers send more cool air during the hot season.

LogisVert

This pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.

Installation by AirGreen

The job

  1. Visit and load calculation: survey of each room on each level, inspection of the duct system and the electrical panel.
  2. Removal of the old electric furnace and, where applicable, the old air conditioner, with recovery of the refrigerant.
  3. FJMA4X cabinet: connection to the plenum and return air, condensate drain to a floor drain or a pump.
  4. Outdoor unit: on a stand or a bracket, above the snow line, away from roof drips and dryer vents.
  5. Refrigerant line: insulated copper, brazing, pressure test and vacuum.
  6. Electrical: dedicated circuit, outdoor disconnect, power to the backup and thermostat wiring for both compressor stages.
  7. Commissioning: refrigerant charge, airflow, test of both levels, the defrost and the backup, balancing between levels, then an explanation of how everything works.

Maintenance and warranty

Check the cabinet filter every month in season and replace it according to its format; in a large home, it loads up faster. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and do not cover it in winter. Plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coils, the condensate drain, the electrical connections and the backup.

Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.
