Full capacity for the extreme days, a reduced stage for all the others

A very large home needs a lot of heating or cooling a few days a year, and much less the rest of the time. The Central Heat Pump ARCOAIRE H4H7T ION 2 stages | 5 Tons - 60,000 BTU (Air Handler FJMA4X) - R410A answers that gap with a two-stage compressor. It pairs the H4H7T60AKAAA outdoor unit with the FJMA4X60L0DB indoor unit, an air handler that pushes air through the existing duct system.

Like any central heat pump, it cools the whole house and handles most of the heating, with a single thermostat and no equipment visible in the rooms.

How a two-stage compressor works

The outdoor unit's compressor has two stages: a reduced stage and a full stage. When the house needs little, the system works on the reduced stage; when demand rises, it switches to the full stage. A single-stage compressor has only one way to run: at full output, in on-and-off cycles.

In a 5-ton system, that difference carries a lot of weight. The full stage is sized for the most demanding days; the reduced stage lets the same unit work gently the rest of the year. This avoids having to choose between a unit big enough for the extremes but too big the rest of the time, and a smaller unit that falls short on peak days.

The shoulder seasons, where the reduced stage works

In Quebec, a good part of the year falls between the extremes: cool September evenings, damp fall weather, the March thaws, fine days in May and June. During these periods, a very large home needs only a fraction of a five-ton system's capacity.

A single-stage unit would run short, repeated cycles there. On the reduced stage, the system instead runs longer and more gently, air circulates more through the ducts and temperatures stay more even between the basement, the main floor and the upper floor. In summer, these longer cycles also give the coil time to remove humidity from the air.

Heat waves and deep cold: the full stage, then backup heat

On heat-wave days, the system switches to the full stage to hold the setpoint all the way to the most exposed rooms. In winter, it does the same when the cold sets in. This pairing is a conventional central heat pump; it is not listed as a cold-climate heat pump, and its heating capacity decreases as the outdoor temperature drops.

In deep cold, the air handler's backup heat, or the existing furnace in an installation that keeps it, supplements the heat. The thermostat always follows the same order: the reduced stage, the full stage, then the backup heat, only when necessary.

Longer run times, and that is normal

Owners used to a single-stage system are sometimes surprised to see the new system run for a long time without stopping. This is the expected behaviour: on the reduced stage, the system is designed to run for long periods rather than constantly starting and stopping.

To let it do its job, keep a steady setpoint rather than large swings between day and night. Recovering several degrees in the morning forces it onto the full stage, and in winter makes it call on the backup heat more than necessary.

Backup heat in a five-ton home

In a home that needs five tons, the backup heat represents a significant electrical load, added to that of the heat pump on the coldest night of winter. The heat pump is fed by a dedicated circuit and the backup heat by its own. During the visit, we check the capacity of the panel and the electrical service, and we list any necessary work in the written quote.

The backup heat capacity is calculated as well: enough to keep the house warm in deep cold, without oversizing a load that weighs on the panel. We determine it from the load calculation, at the same time as the heat pump size.

Homes suited to the 5-ton size

This size typically targets very large homes with ducts: two spacious levels with a fully finished basement, a very spread-out single-storey home, or a home enlarged several times. These are typical examples.

The two-stage compressor makes operation more flexible, but it does not replace proper sizing. The room-by-room load calculation confirms the size based on insulation, windows and airtightness; if it points to another size, we recommend it.

System ratings

The pairing of the H4H7T60AKAAA outdoor unit and the FJMA4X60L0DB indoor unit is not listed with SEER2 ratings in the AHRI certification directory. We therefore publish no efficiency rating for this pairing. We confirm the ratings of the complete system before the quote; they also determine grant eligibility.

LogisVert

This pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.

Installation in a ducted home

The indoor unit takes the place of the old furnace or air handler and connects to the existing duct system. Before the quote, we check duct sizes and the air return, because a central heat pump only delivers its full efficiency if the airflow keeps up. The outdoor unit goes on a stand, above the snow line, on a dedicated circuit.

A duct system ready for the full stage

On days when the system runs on the full stage, the duct system must let a high airflow through. In a very large home, that requires adequate main ducts and, ideally, an air return on each level. Closed bedrooms must also be able to return their air, through a transfer grille or a gap under the door. We measure the duct system during the visit and list the corrections in the quote. The refrigerant is R-410A; a reversing valve lets the system heat and cool.

The installation steps

  1. Visit: load calculation, duct inspection, check of the panel and electrical service.
  2. Air handler installed on the plenum and return, with the planned backup heat.
  3. Outdoor unit on a solid stand, above the snow line, away from snow sliding off the roof.
  4. Line set insulated, evacuated and checked; condensate drain connected to a compliant discharge point.
  5. Thermostat compatible with a two-stage heat pump and its backup heat.
  6. Commissioning: check on both stages, airflow, settings explained.

Maintenance

Replace the system filter according to its format, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coil, condensate drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost is normal. At this size, with long run times, the filter loads up faster: check it every month during the first year.

AirGreen, for the life of the installation
