A premium central heat pump for a family home with a finished basement

In a family home, the finished basement is often a living space in its own right: family room, office, guest room. A central heat pump connected to the existing ducts can heat and cool that level along with the rest of the house, with a single thermostat. The Central Heat Pump ARCOAIRE HSH6 Premium | 2.5 Tons - 30,000 BTU (Air Handler FJMA4X) - R410A pairs the HSH630GKA outdoor unit with the FJMA4X30L0BB cabinet, which pushes air through the duct system.

This pairing from Arcoaire's premium series handles the cooling of every room served and most of the home's heating.

For a good-sized family home

The 2.5-ton size is meant for roomy homes that already have ducts: a two-storey house with a finished basement, an enlarged bungalow, a detached house whose electric furnace and central air conditioner are reaching the end of their life. It is a size that covers several levels, provided the duct system distributes air well to each one. A single cabinet, a single thermostat and a single outdoor unit then serve the basement, the main floor and the bedrooms.

The exact size is confirmed with a room-by-room load calculation. Insulation of the foundation walls, often overlooked, counts as much as the attic's. An older house with uninsulated foundations may need more; a recent house may do with the size below.

The finished basement: heat, coolness and humidity

A basement behaves differently from the upper floors. In winter, it is surrounded by cold ground and tends to stay cooler; in summer, it naturally stays cooler than the rest of the house, but the air there is often more humid. A properly set central system takes both realities into account.

  • In winter, the basement must get enough warm air, through grilles placed low, near the exterior walls.
  • In summer, it needs little cooling; a balancing damper reduces the cool air sent there and directs it upstairs.
  • All year, a return in the basement brings that level's air to the cabinet, where it is filtered and, in summer, dried by the coil.

We check these points during the visit. If a grille or a return is missing in the basement, the correction appears in the quote.

The HSH6 pairing and the FJMA4X cabinet

The HSH630GKA outdoor unit holds the compressor, the outdoor coil and its fan. The FJMA4X30L0BB cabinet is an air handler: it houses the indoor coil, the blower that pushes air through the ducts and the backup electric heating elements. It takes the place of the old electric furnace, usually in the basement, and connects to the existing plenum and return air.

The two units are linked by an insulated copper refrigerant line and run on R-410A. It is this exact pairing that carries the certificate described below; we install it as is.

What the certificate shows

The pairing of the HSH630GKA outdoor unit and the FJMA4X30L0BB indoor unit carries certificate AHRI 210448426, issued under the former test procedure, the one that came before SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings. Its ratings do not compare directly with the SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings of recent equipment, so we do not mix them. We confirm the ratings that apply to the installed system during the visit.

If you compare this system with others, do it on the same basis: we put the options side by side during the visit, and the written quote lists the exact models of both units.

How the heat pump heats the house

A heat pump moves heat instead of producing it. In winter, the refrigerant captures heat from the outdoor air in the outdoor unit; the compressor concentrates it; the cabinet's coil releases it to the air that the blower distributes through the ducts. In summer, a reversing valve turns the cycle around and the heat of the house is released outdoors.

The air coming out of the grilles is warm rather than very hot, and the system runs longer at a time than an electric furnace. Heat arrives more gently and more evenly across the levels.

Winter and the backup heat

Like any conventional heat pump, this one supplies less heat as the cold intensifies, while the house asks for more. In deep cold, the cabinet's backup elements take over the missing share, then switch off when the heat pump is enough again. The thermostat, designed for a heat pump with backup, manages this handover.

In a house of this size, the backup is a significant electrical load. We size it from the load calculation and the capacity of the electrical panel, and list it in the quote.

Where the outdoor unit goes

The outdoor unit runs all winter, and its location matters as much as its connection. We set it on a stand or a wall bracket, above the snow line, so that air flows freely through the coil and defrost water drains without forming ice beneath it. We avoid roof drips, corners where snow piles up, dryer vents and, as far as possible, bedroom windows.

Access matters too: the unit must stay clear for annual maintenance. Some municipalities regulate the distance from property lines; we take this into account when choosing the location.

LogisVert

This pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.

Our installation, step by step

Before the quote

The cabinet takes the place of the old furnace and connects to the existing duct system. Before the quote, we check duct sizes and the air return, because a central heat pump only delivers its full efficiency if the airflow keeps up. We also check the electrical panel's capacity for the outdoor unit's dedicated circuit and for the cabinet's backup.

The job

  1. Removal of the old furnace and the old air conditioner, with recovery of the refrigerant.
  2. Installation of the FJMA4X cabinet, connection to the plenum and return air, condensate drain to a floor drain or a pump.
  3. Installation of the outdoor unit at the chosen location, on a stand or a bracket.
  4. Refrigerant line in insulated copper, brazing, pressure test and vacuum.
  5. Electrical: dedicated circuit, outdoor disconnect, power to the backup and thermostat.
  6. Commissioning: refrigerant charge, airflow, defrost, balancing between the basement and the upper floors, then an explanation of how everything works.

Maintenance and warranty

Check the filter every month in season and replace it according to its format. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and do not cover it in winter. Plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coil, the condensate drain and the electrical connections. In winter, the white vapour during defrost is normal.

Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.
